Rightly of course, but with all of the attention on Steven Gerrard's 701st appearance for Liverpool in what is likely to be his final ever Merseyside derby at the weekend, there's not a lot of time for looking forwards. Nostalgia tends to grip us by the necks and force us to relive both our glory days and the nights we wished to forget. For every 4-0 domination in this game there sits a goalkeeping blunder that allowed Everton a victory. When the fixture list is announced, this game is one not just sought out by both sides of Merseyside any longer, but any fans of football. So it only makes sense to look back.

Steven Gerrard's imminent departure from Liverpool makes many think of his best (and worse) moments for the club, particularly during Merseyside Derby weekend, but people should also be considering what's next. And after some epic performances out of position at centre back and a shining display in the FA Cup, what's next is Emre Can.

Emre has, in recent weeks, proven that he has adapted to the Premier League. Comfortable with the ball at his feet, he's not merely a defensive midfielder. His sublime chip over the Bolton defence to assist for Raheem Sterling's goal during the comeback win in the FA Cup showed a side that we've not yet had much chance to witness. He also screamed a shot that the Bolton keeper had to tip onto the woodwork, and looked comfortable when he was needed to push up the pitch.

Emre is looking more and more like a complete midfielder and increasingly the man who will replace Steven Gerrard when he leaves for LA Galaxy in the summer. While it will undoubtedly be a sad day for everyone connected with Liverpool Football Club, there is a ray of light bursting through the Mersey tunnel that is on its' way to help us through. And if anyone can, Emre Can.
