What did the weekend mean for Liverpool?

The weekend was certainly a busy one on the footballing calendar and the fight for the top 4 places just seems to get more and more interesting every week.

With a few nerves, Liverpool played host to Premier League toppers Arsenal. Despite showing good form all season, Arsenal appeared to fail to turn up at Anfield and Liverpool actually made the London club look like a very average team. It appeared that none of the Arsenal players stood out as Giroud spent the majority of his time moaning to the ref and certain Arsenal players such as Mesut Özil and Oxlade-Chamberlain really were unnoticeable for the whole game.

The one Arsenal player who did stand out, perhaps for all the wrong reasons was Jack Wilshere, who showed Anfield he perhaps has a bit of growing up to do before Rio. Nasty tackles, nipping other players, moaning at nearly every decision (despite pretty much most of the refereeing decisions going for Arsenal anyway). Wilshere even ended up producing a highly embarrassing dive as Gerrard made sure he taught the youngster that he cannot come to Anfield and behave the way he did!

Scoring four goals in just the first twenty minutes gave Liverpool a huge confidence boost thanks to Martin Skrtel’s two great (and very early) goals. Sterling came away with Man of the Match and deservedly so after giving Liverpool two more goals to secure their weekend win. The 19 year old messed up whilst trying to desperately score his hatrick, but luckily this did not cost Liverpool in any way during their 5-1 home win.

Arsenal are to face Manchester United on Wednesday as Wenger will be recovering from Saturday (as well as his fall in Lime Street station) with a tough month ahead. Arsenal always have a difficult February and this season is no different with a battering from Liverpool, Manchester United, Liverpool again in the FA Cup, not to mention a European meet with Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League Chelsea managed to beat Manchester City, allowing them to climb to the top of the table. Hazard scored a hatrick as the blues showed everyone that they do not miss Mata....yet. Manchester City now sit 3rd, just 4 points above Liverpool who are to face Fulham on Wednesday. This game will hopefully not produce the same result for the Reds as it did for Manchester United.

On that occasion Steve Sidwell helped Fulham to get the opening goal in the 19th minute but United’s Van Persie and Carrick helped get Fulham back into the game and this with help of a huge deflection. The game was very one sided and Manchester United caused real concern as they failed to beat bottom of the league Fulham. Darren Bent managed to bring the game to a draw as Manchester United fans booed off their side at full time.

Manchester United made 181 crosses, with only a staggering 18 getting to their target as van Persie and Rooney made 6 passes to each other the whole match and 2 of them were from kick off. Whatever is happening over at Manchester United, the results are saying it all and it is all great news for Liverpool this season as European football comes closer with each win.
