Would you believe it it? Two signings in one day. It’s been busy, busy, busy for the Royals today. Two in, one signed up, one out. I’m looking at transfers, contracts and more today. Stick around.

Rumours had been persisting over the last couple of days that Reading had knocked off Watford and Ipswich to win the race for young Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah on loan. Today Reading have confirmed that yes, indeed, we’ve won said race. The central midfielder signs on until the end of the season and will where the number 14 shirt.

Steve Clarke had this to say on the matter:"Nathaniel is a good young player who I have known about and followed for some time.

"He burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old when he was part of the Watford team that narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in 2012-13. Since that season, he has gained experience at other clubs and now feels that Reading is the right club to further his development as a player and we are delighted that he has chosen us ahead of anyone else.

"He will certainly enhance our already strong midfield department with his qualities. We welcome Nathaniel to the club and look forward to him playing his part in a more successful second half to the season.”

Well clearly this is an early example of Steve Clarke’s fantastic contacts at Chelsea, and although I’m not massively sure we need a central midfielder, Chalobah brings great quality to that central midfielder, and it perhaps indicates that we could be switching to a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3… Which I’m not sure about either....

Moving on, we signed Jure Travner today after a months and months of training and speculation. The club claims a deal was agreed at the end of December and that the waiting was just over international clearance, which has now been given. The 29-year-old left back signs on a free transfer and wheres the number 29. His contract expires at the end of the season.

Steve Clarke said on THIS deal: “Jure is an experienced player who has shown enough in training to suggest that he can help the squad between now and the end of the season. Due to contractual difficulties at his previous club he didn’t play as often as he would have liked and, after a protracted transfer, he now has a chance to show us if he can earn an extended deal here at Reading FC.”

Again, another good signing. Travner provides experience to what is, lets face it, a thoroughly inexperienced defence. I’d love to see him given a run out against Cardiff just so we can get a bit of a taste of what this guys all about. I hope he’s good enough to earn himself a new, longer deal and asserts himself in that first team.

Our third and final injection of good, Reading related news today is that Craig Tanner has signed on until 2017. His deal was due to expire during the summer, but the youngster has committed to the club for the next two years. It’s been a season to remember for Tanner. He scored the fastest ever debut goal in Madejeski Stadium with his strike against Newport County, which I must say was a super goal.

We’ll hear from Craig this time, who said on extending his contract:“I’m overwhelmed to sign, having been here for so long. I’m very happy to be here, and being in the first team here is my goal. The manager has said that it’s a great time for me to go out on loan, he said I’ve done well in training and he just thinks that I should go out there, get some experience, play well and then hopefully I can give him a headache for when I come back.”

Tanner is now to join League Two side AFC Wimbledon on loan until the end of the season, which will give him great experience that he can take with him in his quest for Reading first team football. Let’s hope this isn’t the end of our January business.
