Why Everton need to keep hold of John Stones

Its not a secret that Everton have a number of exciting and promising youngsters. When you look at the likes of Browning, Garbutt and Barkley as well as academy young guns like Ryan Ledson and John- Joe Kenny its hard not to see a bright future lurking on the horizon. But one player who is without doubt the brightest light at Goodison Park is defender John Stones.

It's no coincidence that we looked a lot more like a solid unit on Saturday against the champions because of the return of Stones. For a boy of such a young age (he is only 20 years old) he brings with him so much calmness and composure to our defensive unit. This very calm and composed manner also rubs off on the rest of the team and is a very welcome sight right now.

When you have such a player it can really help to galvanise the team and its' very important that he rekindles the partnership with Jagielka. Last season showed a lot of promise in the defensive partnership of the two and we need to see a return to this. To get both players firing on all cylinders will be a welcome boost for all Evertonian’s.

With the January transfer window now open I can see Stones being high on the list of many managers shopping lists. The good thing for Blues is that it’s also a very difficult window for managers to do business in. I would certainly be more worried if it was the summer window. It’s a proven fact that not as much business gets done. Partly because it’s a shorter window but also because teams have to find replacements and that’s not easy when managers do not want to sell their best players mid season.

John Stones is pivotal to what Roberto Martinez wants to do at Everton. It gives Martinez an outlet from the back to be able to get the ball down and play it along the deck and out from defensive areas. Stones is ridiculously comfortable dribbling out from the back and starting movements off. At times he can feel like a liability when dribbling out from the back four. But such is his confidence in his own ability he rarely makes a mistake. For a player so young playing at the heart of the back four its almost unheard of.

If Everton are going to return to the solid defensive setups of the Moyes era they are going to have to work hard on keeping John Stones. Even more so If they can get the Stones/Jagielka partnership working in tandem then Everton could once again become a team who prides itself on having one of the top three or four defences in the Premier League. When you throw into the mixer Baines and Coleman on the flanks then its hard to see too many stronger defensive units. I have said it before and I will say so again….Johnn Stones is the best young defender in the country and will become for me the best this country has ever produced. And that’s why Everton need to keep John Stones.
