Sam’s the man for Sunderland – finally

At last some decent news at the Stadium of Light with Sam Allardyce taking over the manger’s role.

Article by Jon Guy

He is without doubt the best man for the job. He knows the club as he has played for The Lads and he knows the passion in the North East following his ill-fated short term tenure at St James Park. He also has premiership experience which will be vital in the months ahead.

He comes with a point or two to prove and he now has the ideal club with which to prove it.

Big Sam owes Newcastle for the shabby way in which they treated him and a win in the forthcoming wear-Tyne Derby would be a great start. While he inherits a decent looking squad he clearly does not inherit a cohesive team and that is task number one.

West Ham fans will say he didn’t play the West Ham way – well as Sunderland fans know he will install they type of game we want, 100% commitment and a non-nonsense approach that we win game, we are hard to beat and we are established as a Premier League side. Indeed will the Allardyce way trump the West Ham way I am sure three points in the last trip to Upton Park will do nicely.

He will get the backing of the fans and I believe he is the type of manger that will respond to that. It seems all the talk in the media was well wide of the mark as Ellis Short and the soon to depart Lee Congerton have been talking with Sam and his team for some time.

While we can hail the new era we have to take a look at the short and never sweet period with Dick Advocaat in charge.

Some of the quotes emanating out of the Dutch media are quite frankly as insulting as they are stunning.

If the Little General actually said that a relegation battle was not for him then he has sullied the job he did in the latter stages of last season.

He said he wanted three players to make the squad better and instead he got eight, all of which are internationals. I cannot believe he had no choice in the matter of who came in but the writing was on the wall in pre-season where he came up with some baffling excuses for the poor performances and it is quite clear once the first three or four results went against him he was looking for the exit door.

What the squad must think I do not know but you can be sure that when Big Sam gets stuck into them there will be no doubt who is running the playing side of the club.

There is talk that Kevin Nolan will arrive and he will serve two purposes. He is said to be a very positive character in the dressing room and despite his previous clubs he is a decent player. But he will also be Sam’s eyes and ears in the dressing room and you can expect come January there will be some heading for pastures new.

There is no doubt that we have some bad apples in that dressing room and we have to believe Sam will instil a more professional attitude around the place.

We now have to hope that we will get the stability in the manager’s office we have needed for so many years and I for one believe Sam is the man to give it to us.
