Chelsea legend Di Matteo has also managed MK Dons, West Brom and Schalke but will relish the opportunity to turn around the fortunes of the former Premier League giants.
The 46-year-old Italian won the Champions League as Chelsea boss in 2012 but hasn’t been employed in football since resigning as the manager of Schalke in the Bundesliga just over a year ago.
Tony Xia had made it clear that Di Matteo was first choice on his shortlist and although Xia’s takeover still looks a few weeks from competition, Di Matteo’s appointment will be confirmed.
Sources close to Chinese businessman Xia insist that his £52m buyout of Randy Lerner is progressing as planned, saying rumours that the purchase has hit rocks are wide of the mark.
Xia will hand Di Matteo a summer transfer kitty of £20 million, as and when the takeover goes ahead. His contract with Villa will be valid regardless.
