Sandro - The Tamed Beast

After a less than impressive campaign, there aren’t too many players who fans would have a problem with leaving the club. Aside from the likes of Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris, whose performances have merited their popularity and support from the fans, theirs one player, who seems to have all of our support, regardless of his performances on the pitch. Sandro.
The self-proclaimed, ‘Beast’, joined Tottenham in March 2010 for around £8 Million from Internacional. He experienced a stop start couple of years at the plan, having to play second fiddle in the defensive midfield role behind Scott Parker, yet during the 2012/13 season, the Brazilian established himself as a crucial player in the Tottenham set-up, creating an impressive partnership with Moussa Dembele under Andre Villas Boas.
However in January 2013, the seemingly indestructible Beast got injured, suffering a bad knee injury which ruled him out of the rest of the season, and the start of the following season.
Following spending a period in Brazil to recuperate from his injury, Sandro returned to Tottenham seemingly a different player all together. He’d slimmed down vastly, as well as adopting some impressive facial hair; however his on field performances suffered. The once physical, dominating figure began being pushed off the ball by smaller opponents.
Following Andre Villas Boas’ sacking, and a lack of form, Sandro got relegated to a bit part role in the second half of the season under Tim Sherwood, taking to social media on a number of occasions to insult the unpopular boss, which only led to further growth in his reputation amongst the Tottenham faithful.
Now, naturally he has been linked with a move away from the Lane, with many sources suggesting a move to Italy is very much in motion, with clubs such as Napoli, Roma and Inter Milan, all credited with a move for Sandro, with a figure of £15 Million being bounced around.
These rumours have been slated by the majority of Tottenham fans, suggesting that the sale of Sandro would be a serious negative by the club. However, I’m not convinced that he’s as pivotal as some make out.
Yes, Sandro is a very big character, and is liked by fans and players alike, but he seems to already be on the decline. As previously stated, his physicality isn’t what it was; he’s seemingly less agile and strong. And if a bid of around the £15 Million mark comes in, why not accept? There are better defensive midfielders out there, including one already in our squad, in Etienne Capoue.
The Frenchman was signed from Toulouse last summer, yet suffered an injury hit season which stopped him from shining at the Lane. However as seen before his move to the Capital, he’s a true, old fashioned anchor man who sits in front of the back four, a lot more disciplined than what we have seen from Sandro this season, and even has an eye for goal.
Now, I’m not suggesting that Sandro should be made available to leave, or pushed out the door, in fact I’d love him to stay, but the suggestions that it’d be as bad as potentially allowing Lloris or Eriksen to leave, is ridiculous, as a club, we must become more ruthless, not continuing to employ players, because ‘they’re funny’, or ‘they’re a nice guy’.
At the end of the day, Tottenham Hotspur is a business, who needs to continue to expand and grow, in order to remain competitive. And if a few loose cannons and big personalities need to be cut loose, then so be it, as at the moment, the player power at the Lane is far too strong.

What a pile of horse shit. Sandro is still recuperating from a career threatening injury. He's the heart of the mid-field at Tottenham. How can you promote Capoue ahead of him when he was on the treatment table when he broke a fingernail. Then the threatened to leave if he wasn't playing in his favourite position and a regular in the team. You need your head examined, you fool.
ReplyDeleteAgree with the above comment. Long live The Beast...At WHL. Make him Captain.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore I dare you to tell Sandro that he's 'too small and a pushover to his face
ReplyDeleteHave you ever watched him play ? pivital in allowing flare players to shine. NO WAY should he be sold plus I have just purchased a Beast T Shirt.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this article.I love Sandros personality ,but he doesnt look the same player as he did before the injury I think We knew this when we signed Capoue. Def mids are one of the more easier positions to find quality in and 15 mill for him now would be good business.Allot of fans dont know shit about and get caught up in gimicks.
ReplyDeleteI agree to an extent with what you say, but as a business yes we have to be ruthless, but also we must recognise the value that players have to the club in addition to their presence on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteWho, of the current team could you imagine having a beer with if you happened to see them out? Dawson, Erikson, Walker maybe - that's it. If you're trying to grow the brand, particularly abroad, who could you say is someone they would have heard of?
We have lost Bale, VdV, Benny, even someone like Crouch was recogniseable. Brand Tottenham needs someone whose name fans want on the back of the shirt.
The atmosphere at the lane was so good, and the club so popular because not only was the football good, but the players were generally likeable and so people were happy for us to do well.
I don't want our team just to be a load of boring players, otherwise people won't care as much and the atmosphere suffers.
Sandro has had a difficult time getting back to his best after his knee injury but he deserves a chance this season. Selling so many experienced players last season let to a complete lack of bottle in the squad, I would be very wary of selling someone like Sandro. If you sell all the grafters and players who feel a passion for the club, you end up losing to West Ham 3 times in one season and getting bashed by every team in the top 4.
ReplyDeleteSo a lot of fans dont know shit, well I have supported spurs fo 50 + years and i seen the shit and it would be a shame to sell one of the fans favorite players for financial gain rather than give him untill Jan to prove what i already know that we are a better side with him than without him
ReplyDeleteSandro is a player who has the potential - but we have not seen the true Sandro for a while because of his injury. I'd rather we kept him.

ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with the author's viewpoint. Sandro, as much as we love him, has been on the decline after the injury. This is the second time he has got injured when he was seemingly establishing himself in the starting eleven.Plus, we have enough depth in that position with Capoue and young Jake Livermore coming back.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't just the players who need to acquire a winning mentality - a lot of the fans seem to be happy with perpetually unfit 'good blokes', like Anderton and King in the past, or Sandro and Kaboul today, and we'll never be serious contenders until we acquire the professionalism and occasional ruthlessness that the 'top' clubs have - sell now!
