Why Celtic need a strong Rangers

t's been two years since Rangers FC were liquidated and a new club were formed.
There is a myth doing the rounds that the club were relegated into the bottom tier of Scottish football.
In actual fact Rangers were invited to play in the Scottish League Two the first time of asking.
Many a Celtic fan and indeed other fans of clubs north of the border have been engrossed in the story and indeed revelled in it, loving the fact that Scotland's most domestically successful football institution, appear to have spent monies that they actually did not have, whilst winning various trophies.
The likes of Chelsea and Man City down South may end up with the same fate twenty years from now, if not sooner?
However, it would now appear that Celtic need that challenge again to ignite a domestic campaign which is now won before a ball is kicked.
Celtic are winning the top flight by around the 30 point mark now, which is highly embarrassing, even by SPFL standards.
No other club outside the "old firm" have won the title since 1985 and unless an oil tycoon takes over the likes of Aberdeen FC, that stat will never change.
Attendances are down at Celtic because of lack of competition but Champions League nights are always sell outs.
There is only one more season to go before Rangers should be back up in the top flight and at least having these matches back should create some interest.
Problem for the neutral however, is that Celtic appear to be banking the majority of the monies they have received from Champions League and also selling some of their recent acquisitions for big bucks.
It would appear that they will strive for "ten in a row". That's ten league titles in a row which has evaded both clubs throughout history.
So YES, even the most fanatical Celtic fan would have to agree that they absolutely do need a strong Rangers side both for competition and financial reasons.
A better quality of player will come and ply their trade up north also.
Even Celtic's management team look a bit fed up and already the Assistant Manager has left to try "another challenge".
The quicker that Rangers are back in the top flight the better.
Not for Scottish Football's sake, ( it would appear the other clubs have managed just fine without RFC), but Celtic need a strong Rangers to enable themselves to up a gear or three in the coming seasons.

disagree
ReplyDeleteUtter mince, a strong Rangers would be beneficial to Celtic, possibly, but to claim Celtic "need" Rangers is both ill thought out and poorly written.
ReplyDeleteLink bait with nothing of substance to say.
ReplyDeleteCeltic need a challenge certainly but Rangers are dead and the tribute act are being so badly run it will be a generation before they can provide a genuine challange.
We need to stop harking back to a glorious (and imaginary) past since 2000 even old Rangers could only compete with the benefit of dodgy tax avoidance schemes. We need restructuring at Europe wide level with Celtic allowed to enter another league or with a radical rethink of the distribution model for the money the Champions League generates.
Whether Celtic "need a strong Rangers" or not is entirely irrelevant. Such a thing doesn't exist and the way things are going just now it's going to be a long time before there is any prospect of one again. The new club is financially no better than the old club. They are spending money they are not earning and the cash reserves are either totally gone or as near it as makes no difference. There is no sign of that situation being reversed.
ReplyDeleteNonsense Darren, what are you basing this on? Do you attend Celtic games, have you spoken to other Celtic fans on this subject? As Season ticket holder and share holder, I do not long for a return of the Govan tribute act and neither does anyone else I know. You are peddling a Scottish media myth just like armageddon, oh and look how that turned out. We don't need Rangers (sic) and this is the most lazy article I've read on this site, do some research, ask real questions even perhaps propose some alternatives rather than spin this pathetic story, lazy journalism at its best.
ReplyDeleteRubbish!
ReplyDeleteCeltic do not "need" a strong Rangers - we don't even need the current weak incarnation of that club. What Celtic does need is competition - we got that on occasion and we got well beaten by Aberdeen twice in a couple of weeks: once in the league, once in the (Scottish) cup. Heck Celtic got beaten by Morton in the League Cup. Celtic are not infallible and the Scottish press were arguing that by only winning the league Celtic underperformed this season, clearly Celtic need to improve!
ReplyDeleteCeltic are a well managed club financially, they live within their means, and have done since a near death experience in 1994 and the saving of the club by Fergus McCann et al. The years of scrimping before and after that watershed for Celtic, combined with the overspending of money they couldn't afford (if it was theirs at all!) was what gifted nine-in-a row to Rangers.
I really don't remember any suggestion that Rangers needed a strong Celtic at that time, quite the reverse, the triumphalism was palpable as they closed in on 9IAR whilst Celtic were often as low as 5th in the league and Rangers qualified (and squandered) Champions League money over the period.
It is what it is - both Rangers and Celtic have made their respective beds - they now have to lie in them. The one in the East End of Glasgow will be more comfortable for some years to come...
The main point of this article is entirely fatuous.
ReplyDelete"Rangers" died in 2012 agreed, BUT, what's left will be lucky to survive another season without a major insolvency event and realistically speaking will never be in a position to challenge either Celtic or any of the other top 6 Scottish clubs despite all the wishing and hoping that goes on in the MSM laptop loyal.
The sooner this is accepted the easier it will be for Scottish football to move on.
Utter dross, rangers died Ed007@celtic rumours is a little fud, thinks he's in the know and isnt. Same two or three wee posters(followers) who posts and he answers them as if hes some god,,,, little fud

ReplyDeleteWhat a load of piffle! I think the comments prove that 99%of Celts do not want or need another version of rangers! Personally,I will never ever attend a game between Celtic and Newco, especially after the cheating, rule bending, deliberate non payment of tax, and leaving list of creditors the length of copeland road, all overlooked by a corrupt SFA.even after oldco were found guilty! The last Ever game between Celtic and the old corrupt Rangers, when we humped them 3-0 in 2012,was my last and my best Ever, as after they were liquidated I vowed then I would never attend another game between Celtic and whatever they want to call themselves, after the corrupt SFA tried to get them entry to the SPL.and then gave this new club a licence to play in Scottish football After what they were guilty of! Rotten to the core both of them! I will never EVER see Sevco against my team! nor should any other SPL. football fans! entertain such blatant cheats,
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNot only do Celtic not need any form of Rangers. We don't want them or their vile support.
ReplyDeleteWe do want competition. Anyone but Sevco. After being cheated for at least a decade, I have no desire for a return to a panto. Let them die.
We don't need them for financial reasons. We are doing very well. Perhaps the best run club in Britain. I've no desire to share the CL or any money with that Newco.
People have been staying away for numerous reasons. I know of nobody who has been missing games cause they miss Deadco. I know many who will quit if Cheats FC return.
Your article is mince. Want to write about Scottish football issues? Write about how the SPL paid ESPN (and will now pay BT) to broadcast Newco games to ensure they remained prominent, after allowing the new club entry ahead of other teams with good accounts, etc. We are now in the situation where the league are sponsoring a club despite not having a sponsor themselves.
The Scottish clubs and fans don't want them. We are glad Rangers died and it gives great joy the tribute act that replaced them are a basket case.
The only people missing them are the bigots, the media and the governing body, run by a man who set-up the tax scheme that ended their history.
Utter utter Nonsense.
ReplyDeletePoint 1 Rangers FC no longer exist. Point 2 The overwhelming majority of Celtic supporters hope we never see a Ranger tribute act or its support ever again. Point 3. Even if Sevco (AKA The Rangers) ever made it to the SPFL why would they be able to offer anymore of a challenge than St Johnstone for instance. Remember Sevco FC are skint. Celtic are light years ahead of them in financial terms they would not be able to mount any more a sustainable challenge for the league than any other team. To suggest otherwise is pure fantasy.
Scottish football isn't nearly as stabby as it used to be.
ReplyDeleteMost decent people think that's a good thing.
I think this thread has been hijacked by Zombies, I seen that ED007 taking pelters on McMurdo's blog yesterday so they've came on here to peddle their muck. Why even mention the guy on a thread that has nothing to do with him?
ReplyDeleteOh and those rumours sites are owned by the Associated Press so I doubt he is just some guy in his mum's back room. Look up what the Associated Press do.
Celtic need money, Celtic need intense and fair competition, Celtic need to get out of Scottish football. It is now so far behind in almost every way that its a bigger joke than ever.
ReplyDeletethere is no bright spots on the horizon for Celtic in this tiny set up.
Again we are looking at our best players leaving, we will find it impossible to build a team over any period of time.
We will survive but if we want to thrive we need an exit asap!
They cheated Scottish football and the paying public for years by illegally winning trophies whilst other clubs conducted their business in a fit and proper manner - then simply walked away from owing companies , many of them small and local of £100 Million worth of debt. Why would anyone welcome back such a disgusting cheating body be it in their second , third or fourth form. I'm a season ticket holder and always missed two home matches in the old SPL football calendar due to the violence and bile brought about by their fans - even more so when the debt dodgers lost. Scottish top flight club attendances are on the increase - during a recession - without the poison you refer to. Celtic need a strong Sevco / Newco / Whateverco - who are you kidding !
ReplyDeleteThere is o chance we will get competition from anyone in Scottish football unless our own standards drop considerably.
ReplyDeleteAs above I don't want the poison that is Sevco anywhere near us, but sadly in Scotland they are the only likely source of competition, whether we like that or not.
Our income is falling year on year now and we are struggling to sell STs, no one is interested in games v Ross co, ICT, Killie, M'well etc..we sold over 10kSTY at 0 pounsahead last year and dropped the price of all other tickets too.
Anyone who wants to see Celtic genuinely improve, compete and reach its true potential has to see the only way to do that is to in a different league,
Football has changed irrevocably and the Scottish game has been left behind.
We miss them like a trip to the dentist.
ReplyDeleteWhat part of changing travel route's to the match for safety reasons,
listening to vile chants from a support stuck in the dark ages, and
watching Celtic playing a team who spent money they never had
do I miss. None.
Scottish football is coping fine without them in the top flight.Celtic
are in a unique situation in their history without Rangers or
whatever you choose to call them.Get used to it.
They will implode again. All self inflicted.
Agree with Frank, I think sevco will implode,,,and will 're-emerge' in yet another guise as if nothing happened...its sad that Celtic are somehow seen to be dependent on such a fragile set up.
ReplyDeleteutter pish, poor article, no substance, no truth, another lazy journo who has no idea what he is talking about, we don't need rangers, we don't need sevco, we don't need the tribute act that is currently playing there particular brand of football over at ibrokes.
ReplyDeleteScottish football is in rude health, attendances are up, Aberdeen and st Johnston, cup winners, season tickets up, good competition is welcome at paradise but not from tax dodging morons who think that they are above the law
Nonsense are you on medication.
ReplyDeleteThey were L I Q U I D A T E D is that clear Deid ,Dodo , no more ,blue Parrot.
It has been a joy going to the football for the last two years not having to worry about being attacked by fans who hang onto the carcass.
So again we dont want or need their or anyone pretending to be thems bile in our football grounds.
What a pleasure in fact to be rid of them and their cheating ways guilty of 5 counts of dodging tax(plead guilty) and counting.
Karma hopefully will ensure them or any tribute act are never near the top flight again and ensure a fair and clean atmosphere once we have got referees who can apply the rules fairly and evenly.
At the beginning you state quite clearly "it's been two years since Rangers FC were liquidated and a new club were formed.
ReplyDeleteThere is a myth doing the rounds that the club were relegated into the bottom tier of Scottish football."
Them you propagate that myth by stating "There is only one more season to go before Rangers should be back up in the top flight and at least having these matches back" should create some interest".
"A strong rangers"?. So, you must be around 50 then Darren?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I remember them too. Big Jock Wallace in the dugout. Sandy Jardine, Derek Johnstone et al running about with perms! Won the treble twice - and without any financial doping.
That was the last genuinely "strong" rangers.
Surely no Celtic fan wants to see our CL participation compromised by a tribute act burning through cash that they don't actually have in the desperate and pitiful attempt to prevent us from being rewarded for proper fiscal governance by taking our place at footballs top table.
It's a "no" from me!
I actually enjoy reading that celticrumours site, it can be quite informative and you get some good craic on it at times. Speaking of 'craic' if you're ever on it keep an eye out for a total melt on it called kbarry, he's a prime example of what happens if you take class A drugs! I've seen that ed007 hand him his arse a few times lol
ReplyDelete"So YES, even the most fanatical Celtic fan would have to agree that they absolutely do need a strong Rangers side both for competition and financial reasons."
ReplyDeleteNormally, a concluding deduction like that would have been preceded by a list of convincing financial and sporting reasons to back up the conclusion.
You appear to have omitted them from your article.
It would make as much sense to write:- "We are the people. QED, Celtic need a strong Rangers."
They're deid mate and the tribute act pretending to be them is just a money laundering vehicle. We will need to find ou competition elsewhere because no verssion of Sevco will be providing it anytime soon.
This is tosh on a number of levels:
ReplyDelete1) There is no harking back to days of lore because GRFC are no more
2) The tribute act are not and will not be strong in the foreseeable, they are such a fiscal basket case they'll be fortunate to survive
3) Even if you ignore 1) and 2) most Celtic fans will happily accept less competition for the abscence of ritualistic bigotry and supremicist bile when the peepl hordes come visiting
4) We need more competition but should look to actual existing clubs like Motherwell, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, etc to develop before paying any attention to the 'tribute to tax cheats' playing out of Ibrox.
Let's not extend the myth any longer. They died, gone - buried in 2012, and the sooner they are forgotten the better. Rangers dutched the Scottish game for long enough and have paid the price, (if not their copious debt.) The current tribute act aided and abetted by their pals in the media are clinging on for dear life but the sooner they disappear completely the better for all of us.The game and the country are much better off without them.
ReplyDelete"We wish the new Rangers Football Club every good fortune." - W.Smith, 2 years ago today

Zombie Nation.
Note to author. You can't get something back if it has been liquidated. End of lesson.
ReplyDeleteEd007@celtic rumours takes it up the arse, hes a little rent boy
ReplyDeleteWe dont need you huns. Yesterday, today or 2 morro!!
ReplyDeleteEd007@celtic rumours your maws minge is stinking and her tits are drained from you n everyone else suckling ob em
ReplyDeleteEd007@celtic rumours your mums been wearing that same jacket since you were at school, the auld alky cow used to and still does suck all the boabys
ReplyDeleteEd007 yer ma breath smells of cum and voddy
ReplyDeleteEd007 you yer maw and david all have runny bums
ReplyDeleteEd007@celtic rumours is a typical wee internet bully..ie always gets the last words cos its his site, and he doesnt half talk some shite
ReplyDeleteNo need for the sort of language or personal abuse of anyone. this is a decent debate regardless of what we feel about the piece.
ReplyDeleteI'm with those who say we need to escape Scottish football and all the small minded men who surround it, be they in the media, the SFA, the SPFL or wherever, the people who run the league told us there would be civil disorder if Rangers were vanquished. The media told us the SKY deal would be torn up, the refs who aided them for decades and the judges who told us they gained no sporting advantage by paying players more than they could afford. And finally we have seen everything possible done to portray our fanbase as a 'Catholic' equivalent of them.
Scottish has been shown to be corrupt imo as every attempt was made to save Rangers and to keep them in the top division. Thankfully that decision was outwith the remit of Scottish bodies and was taken in London, otherwise they would still be battling away in the SPL as if nothing ever happened.
Scottish football is ultimately too small for Celtic Football Club, Sevco or no sevco.
