What Was All the Fuss About?!

We weren’t worried, Sunderland were NEVER in trouble anyway. Being seven points adrift at the foot of the table was always the plan!
Clearly Sunderland had been storing up their A-game for a phenomenal run of results deliberately, just to entertain their faithful fans, and repay them for their unerring support!
If only so much were true.
The reality is that Gus Poyet and his staff, as well as the players, have managed to pull off something which nobody in their right mind thought were possible. Safety has been assured, as a result of a startling turn of events, and an astronomic string of wins against some of the top teams in the league, as well as Sunderland’s closest relegation rivals. What’s even crazier is that should we fashion another win on Sunday against Swansea City, and should one or two other results fall in our favour, Poyet’s men can finish as high as twelfth in the league – something that is almost unimaginable!
Having been nailed on relegation candidates for the best part of the season, and with our lovely neighbours to the north having planned an open “relegation party” in one of Newcastle’s more popular night clubs, Sunderland have no doubt spoiled a great many betting slips this season, and rightly so. Personally, I don’t mind admitting I’ve feared watching league games several times this season. It’s as though we’ve played almost the entire term in the bottom three, with the cup runs having provided a welcome distraction from the shameful, unwatchable football we’ve played at certain points of the league season.
The lads have carried the fans up a mountain of hope, only to push them off the other side, on more than one occasion in the Premier League season. One example being a fine home win against Newcastle, with a winnable away fixture at Hull City the following week – only to find ourselves down to nine men without the first forty five minutes even being concluded!
Inconsistency has almost killed us several times; telling then that the one thing that’s saved our lives and transformed our entire campaign has been a string of back to back results, something so badly sought after in the top flight.
Wednesday’s home tie with West Brom was such a huge fixture, not only in terms of gaining points and avoiding relegation, but in that it goes some way to confirming a real come-back for the club. Riding on the crest of a wave, the Black Cats looked tenacious, as though they would take on any team in the world – amazing, if ever proof were needed, that confidence in sport is truly a game changer. One can’t think of many teams in the country that would fancy a crack at Sunderland at this moment in time. As of today, Thursday 8th May, the Wearsiders are top of the “Barclays Premier League form table”, with thirteen points in their last six games, including a Draw at Manchester City, followed by an away win at Chelsea, a home win against Cardiff, then an away win at Manchester United and last night’s two-nil victory over WBA:
This is exactly the sort of run that pundits and fans alike have been crying out for, and to be able to pull it off is nothing short of heroic!
The last thing for Sunderland to do is to finish the season off in style against Swansea. This will not only stand as a massive reward to the fans, but will cement the club’s confidence and more importantly, status, going into the summer transfer window. A fantastic run grabs the attention of the media, other players, and makes Sunderland a more attractive prospect for potential new recruits. Every player wants to play for a club that plays good football under a good manager, and Sunderland under Poyet have been exactly that.
We’ll review the summer ahead in a few days’ time, in the meantime – well done to the lads for getting themselves out of trouble, and an enjoyable Sunday afternoon awaits us. #KeepBelieving
