Giggs is a legend - Let’s keep it that way!

When Ryan Giggs first appeared on the scene, slaloming around befuddled defenders at will, flashing past entire midfield's before smashing the ball home, all with the studs on his boots barely touching the grass, I was mesmerised. I was in awe of a player who made others look like statues, who could run with the ball at feet faster than others could sprint in a straight line.

My dad on the other hand had a problem with Giggs, or more so the fact that he was being called the “New George Best”. My Dad never missed one game Best played for United and had indoctrinated me, quite rightly, with the mantra that Best was essentially the football equivalent of a Norse God, a superhuman sent to earth to single-handedly restore United to their rightful position as Kings of world football.

So this young Giggs boy was nothing like a New George Best, and could never be, as it was an impossibility-simple as. But I didn’t agree; so for years we would argue the case, Dad pointing out every minor mistake Ryan ever made on the field with a tut and a muttered “Best would never have done that” under his breath, I smugly applauding every piece of magic our Welsh Wizard performed.

Of course, we were both right really. Giggs was not George Best, nobody ever could be. But he has broken every record going for a player; he is still playing at 40 years of age;

He is as much a legend as any player in the history of the game and I am humbled when in his awesome presence at Old Trafford.

But now is not the time for him to become our manager. Let’s not go there. Let’s not take the chance of risking his legendary status. Let him learn the trade under am experienced mentor, let’s see how he does. Then maybe in a few years we can revisit the poetic beauty of Ryan Giggs managing United for two decades of glory- at which point he will surely be the greatest contributor to the game the world has ever seen.

  1. I completely agree with you, it would be heart breaking if Ryan Giggs had to leave United just because he didnt do well enough as a manager... and there is no coming back from that... dont throw him too early into the job... the problem with us is that we let our emotions cloud our feeling... ofcourse there is not a better sight then seeing the beloved class of 92 running the team, but what if they dont live upto the task? we would have to see them leave... Giggs should learnt he trade from the new manager as an assistant... maybe even coach the reserve team for a while and then he can comeback and become the gaffer...
