FA Premier League - The Etihad Stadium, Sunday 11th May 2014, K.O 15.00
Match Preview
West Ham travel to Manchester buoyed by their latest derby win over Tottenham, beating Tim Sherwood’s side 2-0 thanks to an own goal from Harry Kane and a free kick from Stewart Downing, making history for Hammers fans in the process by celebrating 3 victories over Spurs in the same season. Big Sam’s side currently sit 12th in the table with 40 points and have stopped the rot of four consecutive defeats prior to beating Tottenham. Manchester City meanwhile know that a draw against West Ham will be enough to bring City their second Premier League in two years, however if Manchester City lose and Liverpool win against Newcastle then Brendan Rogers men will lift the trophy. Manchester City’s last outing was at the Etihad stadium where they ran our 4-0 winners over Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa.
Previous Meetings
Hammers fans will surely not be looking forward to facing Manchester City for the fourth time this season, having played each other over two legs in the Semi Finals of the Capital One Cup, in which Manchester City easily brushed aside West Ham winning 9-0 on aggregate, including a resounding 6-0 win at the Etihad stadium in the first leg of the semi final. Manchester City went on to win the cup against Sunderland, thanks to a sublime goal from Yaya Toure. West Ham’s previous league meeting again resulted in a defeat for West Ham, with City winning 3-1. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring in the 16th minute and doubled his tally in the second half, only for Ricardo Vaz Te to score in the 58th minute, however midfielder David Silva wrapped up all three points for City who went 4th in the Premier League.
Team News
Sam Allardyce will take his West Ham team to Manchester City without the services of on loan Roma striker Marco Borriello who remains sidelined with a calf injury which has affected him since January. However, Big Sam will be boosted by the fact that he has no new injury concerns for the hammers final game of the season. Manuel Pellegrini meanwhile will be boosted by the return of Sergio Aguero who scored the goal which gave City the title in 2012; he has passed fit following an injury suffered in the win against Everton. However, both managers are likely to name unchanged sides following City’s win over Villa and West Ham’s win over Tottenham last weekend.
e-West Ham Prediction
Unfortunately I cant see beyond a city win as a win will surely mean that Manchester City lift the title, however West Ham could be in with a chance of snatching a point if they are able to keep City at bay beyond half time. I think the best West Ham fans can hope for is to see Big Sam’s side have a go and be in the game, and surely improve upon the nightmare 6-0 drumming the hammers received in the first leg of the Capital one cup semi final.
Manchester City 3-1 West Ham
