Another bad couple of days in the history of Liverpool Football Club

 . . . and I don’t mean the Bolton result!

Unless we’ve found the elixir of eternal youth and force-fed gallons of the stuff to Stevie G, we are very soon going to need a new, international standard, young central midfielder and, up until a day or two ago, the young and current England international who goes by the name of Fabian Delph was almost certainly available for as little as £4m, with his contract running out in the next few months and Villa almost certainly happier to get £4m NOW than nothing in a few months.

But now, with LFC more or less saying they won’t be doing any business in the January transfer window that very same player, no doubt very disappointed after all the rumours of a Liverpool bid, has penned a four-and-a-half year contract extension at Villa Park and, because of that, if we decide he is, or could be, a more-than-decent replacement for Stevie G – if the elixir of eternal youth fails to work - the fee for his services is now certain to be nearer £20m. £4m or £20m? The club who forked out £35m for a Geordie with as much finesse as the average car crusher will no doubt make another expensive mistake in the coming months!

And, whilst I realise that our manager isn’t a stand-up comic of note, his protestation that we are keeping not-so-Super Mario, come what may, is reducing most Liverpool fans, I would imagine, to tears and leaving me telling my wife not to resuscitate me under any circumstances if that is true. Who was the worst-ever Liverpool purchase, the Geordie for £35m or our Italian friend at a miserly £16m? You could argue until the cows come home on that one!

As I see it we’ve still got our scientists mixing their chemicals, legs of toad, vomit of elk, penis of newt and whatever other ingredients go into the elixir of eternal youth but until that mixture is proven to work – and I’d like a little shot of it myself if possible – we must still work on the need to replace Stevie G sooner rather than later and Fabian Delph would have been a good bet to do just that.

If the plan is to use Lucas and Jordan Henderson as our midfield axis then we may as well brick-up the trophy room and us it as a time capsule, to be opened in twenty years for the next generation of LFC fans to view. We certainly won’t be winning anything in that time so what use will a trophy room be until then?

Now, we find ourselves still with the vacancy to fill and with one less option in a field of options that was already very sparse, even barren. When I read in the press that we might even be considering a bid for an Evertonian who can’t get the ball on target from twelve yards I just want to curl up and die! Please, please, please, offer me some hope . . .
