The Week That Is: It's Only a Matter Of Simon

As a Liverpool fan, it's getting harder and harder to get on board with the notion of Simon Mignolet as a first-choice keeper. It's difficult to take too. He came from Sunderland with all the credentials of a top shot-stopper, and that's just about the only part of the game he's good at.

The major problem with Mignolet is consistent in most Liverpool fans' minds - he's just too nice. I genuinely saw him doing his weekly shop in the Tesco in Toxteth, and he let a woman go in front of him because he couldn't decide which chewing gum to choose. This moment of real-life Mignolism (trademark) is not only proof of his exceptional niceness, but also a lack of decisiveness in life away from the pitch.

When defenders have a goalkeeper such as Mignolet behind them, they dread the moment when they have to slide the ball backwards because of pressing from the opposition. Against Wimbledon, it was clear that Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho were nervous about passing the ball to him. The indecisiveness that infects these defenders minds can be seen from two moments in recent games.

The first was an obvious one against Burnley on Boxing Day. The ball was passed back to Mignolet by a teammate and, despite being under no pressure, the man lets the ball go out for a corner. Check it out.

Inexplicable, right?

The time he ends up making a decision is even worse. Against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup, Mignolet comes to punch a ball away from a corner that he is never going to get, only to leave an open-goal for Bayo Akinfenwa to slot the ball home.

So, the point here is simple. Brendan Rodgers and the rest of the transfer committee desperately need to sign a new man to sit between the sticks in January. This situation cannot wait until the summer, or it may only be a matter of Simon before he does something that costs us dear.
