Another Summer of Liverpool Failing to Address the Issues?
Article by Red Phil
Well, it’s now official that Raheem Sterling wants OUT of Anfield to we’ve got to hope that, for once, the club does the sensible thing and gets rid of him for a lot of money! We don’t want empty promises that mean he won’t leave this Summer, with us getting £50m for him, and instead he’ll leave next Summer for £20m after a season of looking relatively disinterested.
No, get rid NOW and spend the money wisely on more than adequate replacements! My views on the current squad are well-documented but I loved reading the Express who said “They are weak in defence, lightweight in midfield and powder-puff in attack”. I’ve been saying that for months! And our keeper is still more than ‘iffy’ as well!
The Palace game amounted to a non-game, to all intents and purposes, but we were truly awful and Stevie G must have hurried out of the gate after the game, glad he is leaving that sort of mess behind him.
Far too many tactical changes, from four at the back to three at the back, time and time again in recent weeks, failing defensive midfielders, no creativity in midfield – excluding Coutinho, of course – and no height or goal-scoring potential up front. That is the reality of life at Anfield just now. And who can we currently bring in? Lucas and Allen in midfield! How many times do they need to prove they aren’t good enough? Sakho and Toure in defence? My God, shoot me, somebody! Lambert, Balotelli and Borini up front! It’s no wonder we are fifty goals behind our total for last year, is it?
I watched Arsenal play United on telly. Every Gunner was six-foot tall, athletic, fast and muscular, getting the ball and bursting through, at pace, as if on a mission to single-handedly take on the United defence. Lovely to watch, lovely. Get the ball and quickly take it forward to pressurise the opposition. What do we do? Our team of dwarfs haven’t got the physicality to surge forward in that way, we are too easily knocked off the ball and whilst we haven’t got anybody with a creative spark – excluding Coutinho and Lallana, in the fleeting moments he is on the grass – there’s no goal threat up front even if they did think of a positive final pass.

How we let Bolasie get on the bus going home without locking him an a toilet somewhere until he signed a contract for the next five years is beyond me. No doubt he’ll be back here next year playing for Spurs or one of the top four but we should be getting him NOW with the money we’ll get for Sterling or from our supposedly substantial war chest. That is, of course, if we aren’t on the look-out for more young kids or free transfers like Milner and Ings!!!!!
Emre Can and Alberto Moreno will need counselling this Summer to help them adapt to playing in different roles several times per game, not per season. And, as we are about to be pipped, yet again, by United this time, again, for Begovic, we have to assume that this Summer will be yet another one of failed transfer bids and the squad next season will almost certainly be the same as this year, but without Sterling.

What are the chances of us being shocked by the imminent arrivals of three world-class, £30m players? Somewhere between nil and non-existent, I would think! It’s not in our DNA now to think big as we’ve effectively been changed into being a feeder club for the big guys! For that lack of investment and passion, I blame the owners and manager! When we are rumoured to be proposing to replace a 34-year-old Gerrard with a 36-year-old Andrea Pirlo, who wouldn’t cope with our training sessions, let alone the pace of our game, I think that says it all!
Please, please, please, Liverpool, prove me wrong for once!
