Does The Liverpool Manager Deserve Another Chance?
Article by Red Phil
Let’s look dispassionately at the comings and going at Liverpool.
I’ve just read a headline that we’ve SIGNED two new players so, as fast as my chunky fingers could move I sought the web-site to find out if it is Pedro and Ings, Carvalho and Benteke, Begovic or Vietto or any combination of the players we’ve been rumoured to be interested in. No, Regan Poole and Daniel Lavercombe, two kids who probably haven’t started shaving yet!
Good luck to them, obviously, I hope they do wonderfully well in their Liverpool careers but waiting another six years for them to come good isn’t what I had in mind when I read the headline about two players signing for us. I didn’t expect it to be Eden Hazard and Lionel Messi but I had hopes . . .
And now we find our manager is off to America to stand before the Headmaster and explain why we’ve failed so miserably this year with all but Can and possibly Moreno of the new guys NOT disappointing . . . and even both of them are more often than not being played out of position!
Who can we blame for that? Firstly, the ludicrous transfer committee who seemingly couldn’t agree on which tea-bags to go for’ let alone which world-class superstar to get and, secondly, the manager for continually chopping and changing the team and the tactics and for not telling the owners that the transfer committee is simply NOT working!
We’ve now got a strange situation in that Begovic is more-or-less available now and, unless we are willing to persevere with an error prone keeper, we need a new one. Obviously, we could bid for him NOW, and probably get him, or wait a few weeks until De Gea decides to up-sticks and move to Madrid – necessitating United sign a new keeper – and then we can enter a bidding war with much-richer United and offer him trips to places in Latvia, Romania or Balarus on a cold, wet, wind-swept Thursday night whilst United could then offer him Madrid, Barcelona or Munich in the Champion’s League on a balmy night! Who is he going to choose if we let it get that far? Even I’d choose United under those circumstances and I HATE United! But is isn’t our way now to get deals done early so we’ve already lost Depay to United and we’ll probably lose Begovic to them as well (or Arsenal) . . . which seriously helps our bid to overtake them next year if they get the likes of Depay, Begovic, Bale and Hummels whilst we get a couple of spotty kids!
I keep reading that we are keen on (yes, I know they are only rumours!!!!) Dani Alves and Andrea Pirlo but they are so far past their best they remind me of me . . . and I’m 63! Buying players still coming through puberty or who can remember playing in the early 1980s is not going to help us catch the new big four!
Bloody Hell, we can’t even settle on a team formation, unlike Chelsea, City and Arsenal, so what do we do next year? Play three at the back with most of the three unsuited to it? Find another five-foot-six inch striker to head zero goals, like this year? Continue with defensive midfielders who aren’t up to it and have to play in pairs to achieve what one good player could do and creative midfielders who create two chances per season (excluding the excellent Coutinho and under-used Lallana)?
Personally, I don’t really care if the manager leaves the meeting with the owners as the ex-manager. If we don’t do massive things THIS Summer I think we’ll be ten points behind the top four by October and out of the race for the following year’s Champion’s League positions.
This hasn’t been a poor season that will come good next year, as the manager might suggest. This has been shockingly bad and the manager needs to up his game massively and get rid of players simply not good enough for our club and get players who make other clubs SERIOUSLY worry about the prospect of coming to Anfield. Palace came a few days ago and looked so comfortable I thought either they had fifteen players on the pitch or we had eight! When an opposing keeper fails to get his shirt and shorts dirty, or even sweaty, then something is wrong! He could have taken a book and cognac out with him for all the pressure we put him under and that is all too common these days!
Sakho, Toure, Balotelli, Borini, Allen, Lucas, Lambert and several others MUST go, end of story. Even Sterling should go, as he wants to, but for big bucks. Players such as Pedro, Sissoko, Vietto, Begovic, Benteke, Kjaer, Roberts and Bolasie MUST arrive, end of story, even if I doubt if we could get all of them! Nice thought though . . .
This MUST be the manager’s last chance after the season we’ve just had. If he can’t change our outlook and attitude to buying the best players he should go NOW. If he can’t settle on one settled team formation, and work the players to play it to maximum effect, he should go NOW.
Pirlo and Alves? Good grief, have we fallen that far . . .
