Liverpool's Transfer Activity - Thumbs Down From Me

Article by Red Phil

After getting back from a well-earned holiday I was out-of-touch with the footballing news so I eagerly went to look at the web-site rumours and done deals! Before I went away I was distraught about the rumours that Yaya Toure might bring his bulk and lack of pace to our club . . . and it looks as if we are still in with a shout of that deal happening . . . if you believe the rumours. Thankfully, I don’t but when rumours persist you have to worry in case there is any truth in them. God, that WOULD depress the Hell out of me! When even the City fans I work with tell me he’s not the player he was and won’t see out the end of next season why are we even considering him? Why not go for Didier Drogba as well, to round off a glorious double mistake?

Astonishingly, its even been mooted about us being interested in Radamel Falcao, again, even after he failed so dismally at United, so are we now rummaging through United’s dustbins for our new signings . . . and potentially paying him a quarter of a million pounds a week to similarly fail at Anfield? Not good, if it happens, not good at all!

I see we’ve signed – or agreed to sign - Danny Ings, but one of our former legends suggests he needs to step up a few gears or he might bet “caught out” under the spotlight that follows any Liverpool FC player. Not exactly promising that, was it, as comments go! Obviously he’s not the next Lionel Messi . . .

And, it appears, James Milner is more-or-less signed, sealed and delivered so hopefully that is a bit of good news, even if he wasn’t a regular with City! You never know, we might even tell City they can have Sterling if we can sign one or two more of their cast-offs as part of the deal!

Then I see we about to sign Bogdan, the Bolton keeper, as our number two goalie, just when I was hoping we’d sign another TOP keeper to make Mignolet our number two! Another bit of disappointment there so not massively happy so far.

The fact that the papers keep talking about us having a £25m transfer budget, when we need another £100m transfer kitty, is depressing enough but with City supposedly after Pogba, De Bruyne and Sterling and United having another £150m to spend it is looking as if it won’t be after Christmas when we fall behind the top teams this coming season, it’ll be nearer to October! What a happy birthday that will give me!!!!!

I’ve not seen any more rumours about Benteke, since I returned, early today and bitten to death by mozzies, so I hope his Cup Final display cast him adrift from any plans we may have had for spending almost our entire transfer budget on him . . . or have I just not seen rumours about him yet? With my luck he’ll be pictured leaving Anfield any day now, probably limping, with a hefty contract under his belt!

For several months now we’ve supposedly been “a few hours away” from signing Martin Montoya from Barcelona. I see we have made absolutely no progress on that potential signing. Why am I NOT surprised?

Up to now our transfer business – even the most optimistic, almost appetising, rumours - could easily be blown out of the water by a single deal by any of the big clubs . . . and you can guarantee that such deals will explode on to the scene, in torrents, any day now!

We get excited about signing Adam Bogdan, United are supposedly giving Robert Firmino a medical! Why aren’t WE giving him a medical?

What about Vietto? What about Kovacic? What about Bolassie? What about Alex Song? What about that Lyon striker who looks bloody good but whose name I can’t spell? What about the dire choice we have of central defenders? Who is going to make the goals next near and who is going to put the ball in the net? Are we seriously going to start next season with Toure, Sakho, Allen, Borini, Balotelli, Lambert and Co.? Where is the movement on THESE players, the outward movement?

Just noticed that Sakho says he loves life at LFC and isn’t going anywhere!!!! Can life get any worse!!!!!! What did I do in a previous life to deserve this? Can three-day-old mozzie bites be fatal? I’m beginning to hope so!!!

With returning to training not that far away we’ve got to see movement, both incoming and out-going . . . but any movement has been spectacularly unspectacular so far and hints at this being a very troubling, average season ahead. We’ve kept the captain of the ship but got rid of the underlings, which doesn't exactly sound as if much will change next year, tactically or formation-wise.

We are looking through the offers on display in the pound shop reject bin whilst the big clubs, the new big clubs that once included LFC in that elite category, are all set to spend fortunes on the very best players the world has to offer . . . and we are supposed to be going to make up ground on them next year? Overtaking top teams who have invested heavily in top, top players, by us using their cast-offs, the players THEY don’t think are good enough and an assortment of free-transfer players, is hardly likely is it? Please, come on, get real.

Sorry, unless we get astonishing, bed-wetting, tear-inducing news on the transfer front in the next few days I simply cannot believe that will happen. I even expect us to accept a fee for Sterling far below what most fans think he is worth . . . and then spend that money fairly imprudently! My best guess is that we’ll flog him for £35m or keep him as an unhappy, disillusioned player for two years until he leaves for much less. THAT is how far my confidence of success has shrunk under this management! Mind you, I’m still hopeful of staying in the Premier League after next season. God, I sound too much like a Crystal Palace, West Brom or Sunderland fan these days . .

Is that what we’ve become, what we are willing to accept?

I want to go back on my holidays, to do battle again with the mozzies . . . with the current score being mozzies ten, me nil, but I think I’ve got them a bit worried, on the ropes, etc., . . .

  1. In total agreement! Sakho apparently says he won't leave because he has things to prove! Yeah, like he can control a ball in less than ten touches and next season his distribution can't be any worse than it was last season!

My guess is that he will have no option but to give up on both of those ludicrously ambitious targets before Christmas . . .

Shame we don't judge players on their ability any more, or what they bring to the team. Instead, if they are happy living on Merseyside we just let them bring our club down from a position of some respect to that of a laughing stock! He is a mistake ready to happen every time the ball goes near him yet gets selected if fit. No matter how badly he plays he is almost always selected if capable of standing. WHY? The fans deserve better than sub-standard dross being recycled every week by certain, seemingly untouchable players the fans can see aren't good enough but the manager can't accept it, or won't accept it. And, as for the transfer activity so far, we are not buying the sort of players that will give the fans much hope for next year.
I look forward to hearing Mr Rodgers' excuses when we are ten points behind the top teams after ten games!
