English Championship Round-Up 5/10/13.

Article by Lucas Whitehead

Bournemouth 5 – 2 Millwall

The pleasant chaps in Bermondsey were defeated 5-2 in a result that will surely be remembered by both sets of fans for the right and wrong reasons. At a sunny Dean Court, Millwall’s Martyn Waghorn scored in the 6th minute and assisted Liam Trotter in the 10th minute to send Millwall 2-0 up early on, it looked like the lions of Bermondsey would maul the cherries until a glimmer of hope was rescued by intricate winger Ryan Fraser in the 43rd minute. A 2-1 at half-time. A drilling team talk of Neil Warnock proportions was delivered by Eddie Howe and Bournemouth’s Ian Harte whipped in a corner which was met by the talismanic Steve Cook, a 50th minute equaliser. 5 minutes later, midfield prodigy Harry Arter’s long shot made it 3-2 to Bournemouth and a cloud of hatred descended upon Millwall’s right back Alan Dunne in the 59th when he fouled in the box and was sent off, Lewis Grabban grabbed his side’s fourth from the spot. Paul Connolly fouled Ryan Fraser in the box in the last minute and Brett Pitman scored the resulting penalty. 5-2.

Birmingham City 1-2 Bolton Wanderers

Melancholy at St. Andrews today as North West prevailed over West. In the 12th minute, Dan Burn catastrophically gifted Jermaine Beckford and Bolton a goal. In the 64th minute Darren Randolph gawped at a Beckford header hitting the crossbar and basically allowed Neil Danns to head home, 2-0 to Bolton. Nikola Zigic rescued a bit of pride for Birmingham in the 69th but the battle of the Bs was well won by Bolton.

Burnley 2-1 Reading

The Dingles defeated Reading and scored all 3. The Prolific and Persistent Danny Ings scored from close range in the 14th minute after one of my favourite right backs, Kieran Trippier, played a long ball into the box that wasn’t cleared. With 80 minutes gone, Sam Vokes doubled Reading’s deficit and in the 82nd minute, Championship player of the month nominee Jason Shackell’s knee gave Reading a goal that they could not build upon and the match ended 2-1.

Charlton Athletic 0-0 Blackpool

In this stalemate it was Tom Ince who came closest to scoring when his rare miss in the dying stages but he sealed Blackpool’s fate. A draw.

Derby County 3-1 Leeds United

An exasperated sigh best describes this result for me but I will attempt to be unbiased in my evaluation of this disappointing result.

Leeds’ sorry peacocks were Ram-raided for the 10th successive time today. 20 minutes in Chris Martin scored in the box for the Rams and still wounded, Leeds conceded two minutes later when Johnny Russell was played in by a slick Chris Martin back-heel to strike low and beat Paddy Kenny. The man with the head like a 50 pence coin headed into an open net in the 45th minute. Jason Pearce’s first goal for Leeds United was certainly not one to remember. Will Hughes’ superb individual goal killed us off however when his top corner strike during the 78th minute was not saved. 3-1.

Lambast me for my pessimism but in my short time as a Leeds fan what has there been to be optimistic about? Twice now in three seasons managers have stepped in towards the end of their predecessor’s drab last season and results have picked up. In pre-season several new acquisitions have been made and at the start of a season promotion has been the aim, however this optimism always dies when the players turn out to be mediocre. Five shining lights stand out for me though in the shape of Sam Byram, Dominic Poleon, Alex Mowatt, Luke Murphy and although this is debatable Jason Pearce. Where is Norris? Where is White? Where is McCormack? Where is Hunt? Noel Hunt is like an Irish Heskey at the moment and McCormack has been infuriating since his contract extension. A couple of loan signings that would bring exuberance, width and goals are desperately needed. McDermott is brutally honest, or is he? To me, he seems sly and you will notice that most of what he says in interviews and in post-match comments can be picked apart and it looks like drivel just used to impress and compliment the more fickle fans.

Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Leicester City

A great Dane sulked in the corner at the Keepmoat today as Kasper Schmeichel’s careless hands in the 17th minute gave Doncaster a shock win.

Huddersfield Town 1-2 Watford

Udinese B stung the Terriers today as Danny ward put the West Yorkshire outfit ahead in the 17th minute with a rare header. Fernando Forestieri scored in the 18th though with a curling finish. In the 43rd minute Daniel Pudil tapped into the net to make it 2-1, and th.... th... that was all folks!

Bradford City were the only West Yorkshire side to win today, beating Walsall 2-0, even FC Halifax lost 4-3 to Luton Town!!!

Middlesbrough 4-1 Yeovil Town

North east 4-1 South west. A long and sad trip back to Yeovil followed a sad day on Teesside for the Glovers. Davis opened the scoring for Yeovil in the 4th minute before Grant Leadbitter replied for The Boro’ 4 minutes after. Albert Adomah scored in the 24th from a penalty rebound before Jacob Butterfield and Kei Kamara scored late on for the smoggies.

QPR 2-0 Barnsley

Charlie Austin: Six million dollar man. Barnsley fans braced themselves for a sorrowful journey back up north after a Charlie Austin double. Austin drilled a shot into Barnsley’s goal in the 66th and scored from the spot in the 87th to wrap up the win leaving QPR second in the table to Burnley.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Ipswich Town

A dull draw at Hillsborough today, in the 12thPaul Anderson scored for Ipswich only to be cancelled out by the speedy Michail Antonio in the 14th minute.

Late Kick off
Brighton and Hove Albion 1-3 Nottingham Forest

The seagulls flew into a forest and collided with the trees (sorry!) The Reds of Nottingham rallied back from a 1-0 half time deficit to beat Brighton 3-1, a rare brace from ex-Arsenal prodigy Henri Lansbury, one from the spot and a Darius Henderson goal to separate the two were enough to see off the seagulls even though they lost Nathaniel Chalobah through a red card.
