Jose: The Messiah or Just a Very Naughty Boy?

Article by John Hannam

As with the Monty Python character Brian many people are currently not quite sure if Jose Mourinho is all he is cracked up to be.

His second coming or resurrection this time round has so far, lets face it, been a little bit underwhelming. I am an ardent and long term Chelsea fan, and a huge Jose fan and even I'm left feeling a little bit, well...flat is the word I suppose. When Jose arrived the first time it was like an alien had landed, not only was he brilliantly over confident and arrogant but he was funny, mischievous, and had an amazing talent for seemingly innocent remarks that squashed our opponents noses right into the nearest pile of doggy mess. Not only that but he backed it all up with managerial brilliance. Under him Chelsea came out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and stayed there for two whole seasons.

The Chelsea in the 2004/2007 era gave the impression of being some bulletproof monster who no matter what you threw at them always came back for more, and more often than not triumphed whatever the adversity.

This time round Chelsea and Jose are different. The side has huge potential and bags of skills but is perhaps two years off being that un-tameable beast of before. They are still going through a style transition from power to skill and stealth, and as a result we are seeing many teething troubles.

Jose too is very different. Quieter, slightly more introspective, slightly less arrogant (although the ego is still something to behold), certainly less willing to be openly combative and drop verbal hand grenades at the slightest provocation. He claims to have matured but has he improved. Only time will tell, and that's even if he is given the time by the notoriously triggered fingered owner. Chelsea have made a steady start so far and in dropping and criticising Chelsea fans idol Juan Mata Jose has shown he has lost none of his appetite for controversy or a fight. If he can gel the emerging brilliance of players like Oscar, Hazard, De Bruyne with the steel and experience of Terry, Cole, Lampard then he may be on the verge of creating something truly special.

Special 1 t-shirts sell like hot cakes in the club shop and I for one still firmly believe in our man. Time is all he needs. He is too good a manager not to get it right if left to get on with it. If Chelsea win the league this year or next, a couple of other trophies and possibly even another Champions League then nobody could deny the Messiah tag. For the sake of entertainment and fun though let's hope he doesn't completely stop being a naughty boy...

PS: I've just had a terrible thought, at the end of the film Brian was crucified....by a Roman!
