September Premier League Player of the Month - You Decide
2nd October 2013 – Paul Glanfield
September’s key talking points were Di Canio’s dismissal from Sunderland, Arsenal’s rise to the top of the Premier League table and the worrying signs for both Manchester clubs after shock defeats during the course of the month were sandwiched around a highly one sided derby between the sides. Below we discuss the outstanding individuals making this month’s shortlist for Premier League Player of the Month:
1. Aaron Ramsey – There is a welsh wizard at large in the Premier League and his influence to date has been huge for a North London side. This however, is no one man team. Arsenal have been sensational by and large over the course of the month and Ramsey has been a standout performer. The build-up to Arsenal’s second goal against Swansea was a joy to behold and Ramsey capped off a sensational month with another stunning finish. This is a player really coming into his own now after a turbulent time at the Emirates and although it is unreasonable to expect Ramsey to continue such outrageous goal scoring exploits each month moving forwards, embedding himself in a midfield full of such quality for the rest of season should enable the young Welshman to fully showcase his talent over the course of the campaign.
2. Daniel Sturridge – Carrying on from a cracking August with a slick September helping Liverpool continue their impressive start barring the blip against an impressive Southampton side. Sturridge looks every bit a top Premier League striker at the moment and the prospect of him and Suarez gelling should make the other Champions League hopefuls sit up and take notice of Liverpool’s intentions this season.
3. Gylfi Sigurdsson – The Spurs man seems to be thriving in AVB’s new look team against all the odds. With the attacking arrivals over the course of the summer the Icelandic international’s position with Spurs looked vulnerable but he has responded magnificently, slotting superbly into the team’s newly found possession based footballing ethic compared to the counter attacking style of last season. He has formed an understanding with new arrivals such as Christian Eriksen (himself a notable exclusion from this shortlist) and sharpened an eye for goal which threatened but never quite delivered last season. Three September goals give Gylfi a well-deserved place in our top five.
4. Stephane Sessegnon – The Baggies made a slow start to the season but bounced back in September with two wins and a draw including the fully deserved victory at Old Trafford. Despite only making his debut in the 3-0 win over Sunderland, Sessegnon’s performances in that game and the victory over Manchester United make him one of the standout performers of the month in terms of influencing his team, igniting what had been a poor start to the season for West Brom with the kind of energy and elegance that will have the whole club feeling a lot more positive about the season to come.
5. Ross Barkley – An English talent whom already looks well at home in the Premier League and relishing the opportunity to play behind Romelu Lukaku. Everton maintain the only unbeaten record in the Premier League and Barkley’s performances have been a joy to behold in a free flowing side. Surely already working his way towards the plane to Rio, should England qualify for the World Cup Finals.
