Future Premier League Stars

What do Kyle Walker, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck all have in common? Regularly included in England squads? All currently playing important roles for their Premiership clubs? You wouldn’t be wrong with either of those statements but they’ve also spent time on loan to other clubs to aid their development. Loaning young players out isn’t a new idea. David Beckham spent time at Preston North End, Frank Lampard at Swansea City and Jermain Defoe at Bournemouth. All three have gone onto have successful careers in the Premier League and represented England on numerous occasions too. It’s worth keeping an eye on the young English players who are currently out on loan from the Premiership as these are potentially the future stars of the top flight and England internationals.

Manchester United have sent a few players out to Championship clubs in an attempt to prepare them for life in the top division. Nick Powell has found himself at Wigan Athletic. Having signed from Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2012, Powell found opportunities limited at Old Trafford but is now playing and scoring in the Europa League as a result of Wigan’s FA Cup Final victory over Manchester City last season. He has already represented England at Under 21 level and is still only 19 years of age. This is Powell’s first taste of Championship football and should help him develop from a midfielder full of potential to a young man capable of making the step up to the Premiership.

Jesse Lingard, Powell’s fellow England Under 21, is enjoying life with Birmingham City. He spent time on loan with Leicester City last season but didn’t get many opportunities to show what he could do. He wasted no time in the West Midlands bagging four goals on his debut. He impressed many people with his performances for Manchester United during pre-season and must be hoping that this loan move is the springboard his career needs.

Tottenham’s Jake Livermore has managed to gain some extra Premiership experience by going on loan to Hull City. With one England cap to his name already, Livermore will be hoping that his time away will prove as productive as Andros Townsend’s spell with QPR last season. He has already picked up plenty of Championship experience with Leeds and Ipswich just two of his many previous loan locations. He has already made eight league appearances this season and, if he can continue to get games, that won’t do his chances of further international recognition any harm.

Andre Wisdom has already made two Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season following on from his successful break into the first team last year. He now finds himself on loan to Derby County in the Championship. Wisdom has become a regular at the back for England Under 21’s in recent fixtures and his versatility could see him break into the senior side in the near future. Gareth Southgate recently named him captain of the Under 21’s which shows that he has the leadership credentials to go with his strong defensive attributes.

Last but not least is Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah. The 18 year old, Sierra Leone born midfielder has already completed one successful season at Championship level helping Watford to the Play-off Final. He now finds himself at Nottingham Forest hoping to build on that success and improve his chances of breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge. He’s already only one shy of a dozen England Under 21 caps and can play at the back as well as central midfield. He showed last season that he’s not afraid to shoot from distance and when he gets it right there’s no stopping his shots.

At a time where people are bemoaning a lack of young English talent in the Premier League, it might be worth taking a look at the Championship to see how the stars of tomorrow are getting on. It might not be long until we see some of these names in Roy Hodgson’s team alongside Walker, Welbeck and Cleverley.
