Celtic FC: Buy Cheap Buy Twice
Article by Rory HigginsSo it’s another game into the SPL season and another 3 points on the board for league leaders Celtic but questions still remain on whether the front line is good enough for not just the Champions League but even the SPL.
Yes Celtic took all 3 points against Ross County over the weekend but where did the goals come from? 2 of them came from Centre Half Virgil Van Dijk who looks to be an inspired signing and the other from midfielder Joe Ledley who himself looks like he could be off in the summer with no signs of an immediate contract extension.
Lennon on Saturday again showed his faith in Teemu Pukki by starting him in the game at Dingwall and again Pukki failed to deliver the goods. From what I’ve seen of the Finnish striker so far I find it hard to believe that he was anywhere near one of the clubs top targets in the summer for the strikers role, but instead a last minute punt as they felt the fans pressure to replace the clubs leading scorer from the previous 2 seasons Gary Hooper.
If news is to believed today Celtic are on the brink of signing young Icelandic striker Fridjonsson, I’m not going to write off the young lad as he may well turn out to be one for the future but at this moment in time Celtic do not need to sign a striker for the future we need to sign a striker for here and now as the goals tally in Europe this year has shown.
Celtic need to dig a little deeper in to their pockets come the January transfer window and buy a proven goalscorer maybe even from the lower tiers of English football like they did Gary Hooper if they even want to give someone a real game if they are still in European football at the turn of the new year.

The reality of the situation is that if you want a reliable goalscorer, it costs good money. Whilst the likes of Pukki, Balde and now Fridjonsson are relatively cheap, this is false economy as they will not come close to replacing Hooper's goals, particularly at Champions League level. Isn't it more sensible to pay £5m+ for one quality striker in the mould of Hooper who is a proven goalscorer and use the money saved from Pukki, Balde and Fridjonsson to pay his wages. Such a goalscorer would have made a significant difference in our performance against Milan and Ajax and would have repaid the fee by qualification to the last 16.
ReplyDeleteSpot on post Rory, but nothing new as all the Celtic supporters know where our problems lie. Our biggest problem is that Neil Lennon thinks James Forest can play :(
