“Fat Lady to the Stage Please……….”
Article by e-Sunderland Correspondent Ben Mummery
If Sunderland fans thought that last week’s performance against West Ham was poor, they could have no idea what was in store at White Hart Lane last night. The Black Cats slumped to what has to have been their most humiliating defeat of the season, and following a promising start which features Lee Cattermole’s first ever Sunderland goal, fans could only stand and watch as their side rolled over and had their tummies tickled.
The most hurtful part of Sunderland’s performance was that they at no point, played like a team who are rock bottom of the league and staring relegation in the face. There was no urgency, no desire, and no real hunger to go and win the game, which following Tottenham’s recent poor run of results, could have been more than possible had the Sunderland players been man enough for the task in hand. Alas, quite the opposite.
The same basic errors that have haunted Sunderland all season crept back in after the twenty minute mark, as after having scored what was in fairness, a good early goal, Poyet’s men took their foot off the gas, and seemed to have one foot on the bus back home to Wearside.
Spurs’ equaliser and second goal, were two of the most basic goals that any football team can score. Hard, flat crosses whipped in hard across the six yard line, which three, yes THREE central defenders failed to deal with, allowing simple finishes for Adebayor and Kane; what’s more worrying was that on both occasions, the ball was allowed into be put quite simply into the box, with the provider on both occasions in acres of space and free to do with the ball as he pleased!
These simple errors have no place in Premiership football, and to the players who are constantly making them, the same applies. The incredible lack of, for want of a better word, “ability” on show in Sunderland’s last few fixtures has left few in any doubt that there is nothing short of an alarming lack of quality in our squad, and as such have left the fans resigned to the fact that next season we will be a Sky Bet Championship team.
