“Something is Wrong at Sunderland” – We hear you, Gus!

Article by e-Sunderland Correspondent Ben Mummery

After yet another damning defeat on Saturday, Sunderland’s gentle slide toward the jaws of relegation is all but complete.

A spirited performance non the less, but an own goal caused by yet another costly error put pain to any chance of Sunderland making it three in a row against Everton in the Premier League.

The manager has been quoted in local press this weekend as having some clear concerns about the way the club is run, and this in turn has caused many fans to breathe a sigh of relief, as at least now someone from the organisation has come out publicly and admitted as much!

Poyet was quoted in the Journal after the Everton game:

“I think there’s something wrong in the football club and it’s not an excuse. I need to find that. If I don’t find it, we’ve got a problem.

“I think I know what it is but no, I don’t. You know, you think. It’s too many times, too many things. I always say to myself ‘What happened with Brucie in the second year?’, ‘What happened with Martin O’Neill?’, ‘What happened with Di Canio?’ and what happens with me now?

“I don’t want to get away from the responsibility because I said on Monday night I am responsible. I am the first one. But who is going to be next? A, B, C – you can call him anything and the club will be in the same situation. I don’t like it, it’s not me. I need to find the solution and whatever it is, I need to put it there.”

Reading between the lines, it would seem that Gus is hinting at a problem either with board and the way the club is ran from the top, or more likely, an institutionalised issue with player’s attitudes. Should the latter be true, then perish the thought, but Paolo might have been right all along!

Player power has proved a problem at our club before, but with so many at the end of their contracts, and so many likely to be out the door come relegation hour, who knows how this problem will pan itself out!

  1. EVERY fan deep down, knows that PDC was right about these players. Unfortunately PDC was as bonkers as the board was feckless in giving him the job in the first place.... And then we had/still have De Fanti and Byrne.. Who allowed these 2 footballing sages to sanction the transfers in and out of the club which would leave us with such an inexperienced group at PL (and English football) level? I agree there are failings at the club going back years, the Academy for example. Having only one player of note (Henderson) come through since Michael Bridges is pathetic... BTW, we sold them both and bought rubbish with the money!!. However, the current plight is not down to the Academy, it's down to the heartless and talentless buys of the last 5 transfer windows not something deep rooted at the club (unless wasting money is a deep rooted ailment). Step forward Gardner, Larrson, Westwood, Vaughan, Brown, O'Shea, Whickham, Graham, Cuellar, N'Diaye, Altidore, Giaccherini, Dossena, Cabral, Diakite, Roberge, Mavrais, Moberg Karllson, Scocco, Vergini, Ba. All these players (please note: no bidders throughout their lucrative contracts!!) have been signed by the 4 managers (himself included) who Poyet refers to in his ill-timed but calculated (unlike PDC) rant...
Hopefully, Ellis Short can sort out the mess. The appointment of Congleton might help bring some football knowledge into the decision making and bring us though yet another false dawn!
