Manchester United join Chelsea in race for Everton's John Stones

Chelsea have been openly chasing John stones during the summer transfer window, leaving many to wonder whether Jose Mourinho has overstepped the mark in making the interest public. However, Manchester United have now asked to be kept informed of the situation, despite Everton's insistence that the young defender is not for sale.

Chelsea are yet to formally follow up their initial £20m bid for Stones – despite reports insisting that a £34m offer was forthcoming within days.

The Daily Mirror, who reported United's interest, place a £38m price tag on the 21-year-old England international and insist that Manchester United have made "discreet contact" with their Premier League counterparts.
