Going Down Without Even A Whimper

Article by Mik Hancock

There’s a great old Jazz standard, recorded by many artists in the 1930’s, but popularised in his camp and humorous way by George Melly in the 1950’s entitled ‘My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes’.

Sadly by the time this article is published, I can only see my fellow Canary supporters having teardrops under their eyes. There is no escaping it, The Canaries have been worse than poor this season and they deserve to be going down without even a whimper and the club’s brief 3 year fling with the Premier League is over. But where has it left the club?

Well, they’re certainly one of the few soccer teams that live within their means and the three years in the top flight have put the club significantly in the black. But there’s a lot of pruning to be done. Players signed have not lived to their extortionate price tags and the wages bill will now have to be drastically reduced.

I guess that means selling the ineffective Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, no doubt at a bargain price compared to what he was purchased for and then some of the underperforming players, undoubtedly on higher wages, being shown the door (preferably at the end of a boot).

Now you can call me cynical, but it would not surprise me if this was all part of the scheme anyway. David McNally (the Chief Executive) originally had a seven year plan leading to Premier League football. Next season will only be year six. So the club drop a division. Okay the loss of TV rights is massive, but with lots of new players on lower wages coming in, the take up on replica shirts will be greater. There will also be many members of the successful FA Cup winning squad champing at the bit. All these will represent a lower wages bill. With many new players, younger fans will then require the latest replica shirt bearing the name of their favoured squad member, all more cash going in the coffers. Delia Smith and her fellow directors will hardly be spluttering in their claret!

As a final aside, I suggested a few weeks ago that fans make their opinion of the season clear and vote for Luciano Becchio as Player of The Season, as he’s only managed about 30 minutes total in 30 games. Well, I’m sad to say this won’t be happening as Carlo Nash, the third choice goalkeeper that has never played for the 1st team, seems to be polling around 5 times as many votes as the rest combined. So if you happen to be on facebook or twitter your vote will be counted. So the name again to vote for CARLO NASH.
