In Pochettino we must now trust

It’s a few days after the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino and judging by the views on social media and various media outlets the reception towards the appointment has been very good. I must admit Pochettino wasn’t my first choice, Frank De Boer was, but over the last few weeks there have been some really good reports on Pochettino that I’ve read and his football at Southampton has been easy on the eye, so I have warmed to him.

Over the last few days the general view was that it was only a matter of time before Pochettino was named, but the biggest shock for me is the length of contract. By giving Pochettino a five year deal this signals a major change of strategy from the board and is a big statement. Many people say that contracts are not worth the paper they are written on but this is a big show of faith for Pochettino and his team. The time for the club to start building something is now. The reputation of Spurs has been damaged by our hire and fire policy and it is being used as a stick to beat us with. This length of contract offered to Pochettino must mean that the board have realised that they cannot carry on with the instability that they have been bringing to the club and that is a big step forward for us.

It appears from Daniel Levy’s comments to Jim White at Sky Sports News on Tuesday evening that Pochettino wasn’t the only person who was spoken to regarding the Head Coach vacancy and that he was appointed because of the impression he made and his football philosophy. His keenness in bringing young players through was also seen as a real plus point considering the financial fair play restrictions that are now in place. This sounds great so let’s hope he gets the time to do it.

I don’t just mean time from the board either. I mean time from the fans. For those of us who go to the lane the experience over the last few seasons has been negative. A once electric ground for atmosphere has become a graveyard and not only for managers and coaches. Some of this has been due to some of the football we have played but a lot of it has been because of our unrealistic expectations. The promised land of the top 4 has become a milestone around our neck and has become the only measure of success. This is nonsense and I for one do not expect a top 4 finish next season. We have to give Pochettino time. He will have a style of play that some of the current squad will not be able to deliver so it will take time for him to bed his views and style of play into the squad.

We have to be prepared for that. The same people who moan about managers being sacked are the same people who are booing the team if they are not 2-0 up after twenty minutes and this needs to stop. My intention is not to patronise anyone. But as a fan base we need to show our support to Mauricio. There is some talent at the club but you only need to look at our defence to be reminded that we still have some problem areas that he will need to sort out.

Everyone at the club needs to work together to achieve all the goals we set ourselves. It seems that Franco Baldini was instrumental in choosing Pochettino for the job. This is important. The Director of Football has to have the same football views and philosophy of the coach and has to be his man. My view has always been that if Levy was keeping Baldini then he must choose the new coach. He has to be his man. It was clear that AVB and Baldini were not on the same page, hopefully Pochettino and Baldini will be.

So now the Head Coach is in place, you can already feel the positivity coming back to the fans. Now we have a World Cup to look forward to a summer of transfer speculation but it’s good to know we have a Head Coach in place and roll on July 19th and the start of pre season.
