Manchester United Vs Newcastle United Match Preview

Article by Sophie Hedley

Manchester United will be looking to fight back after losing at home to Everton, their second Premier League defeat at Old Trafford this season.

United, who last lost two consecutive home games in the league in 2002, come up against a Newcastle side in good form minus a midweek defeat to Swansea. The Magpies sit two places ahead of United in the league but a draw would be enough for the Red Devils to overtake them.

Manchester United will be without the in-form Wayne Rooney for this fixture as he picked up a fifth yellow card of the season against Everton. Robin Van Persie could also be missing for United, with the Dutchman struggling with a groin injury.

This means a likely start up-front for Javier Hernandez, who scored the winner in this game last season as Manchester United edged to a 4-3 victory having been behind three times. Phil Jones could return to the starting line-up for United as he’s available again following a one-game suspension picked up in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew may look to change his side after Newcastle were hurt by a 3-0 defeat at the Liberty Stadium. However, he is unlikely to be able to call on striker Papiss Cisse, who was ruled out of the Swansea game with a heel injury and remains a doubt for the fixture at Old Trafford.

Hatem Ben Arfa was also missing against Swansea through illness but is expected to return to the Newcastle squad in time for this fixture. The Frenchman is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench, with Shola Ameobi and Loic Remy continuing in attack for the Magpies.

Left back Massadio Haidara is pushing for a start after his first Premier League appearance of the season against Swansea, although it’s expected that Davide Santon will retain his place in a defence which had only conceded two goals last month.

Pardew, talking in the Chronicle, said:

“Haidara has been out a long time with injuries.

“He has been unlucky since he has been here.

“He gives us a natural left foot and we think he has a big future with us.

“I thought he would give us a bit of energy [against Swansea].

“It was good for him and good for us that he got that period.”

My Thoughts:

After a great November which saw Alan Pardew named Premier League Manager of the Month and Tim Krul named Player of the Month, Newcastle came crashing back to reality with a 3-0 defeat at Swansea.

I thought the scoreline in that match was harsh as a few decisions went against us and Jonjo Shelvey arguably shouldn’t have been on the pitch. However, we didn’t deserve to win and now we head to Old Trafford, where Manchester United suffered a midweek loss of their own against Everton.

I don’t think Man United’s struggles mean we should take them lightly, even if Van Persie doesn’t make the game. However, I’ll take the optimistic route and say that if we can beat Chelsea and Spurs, we can take it to Moyes’ side.

We have a terrible record against United but if our defence and the likes of Loic Remy put in the kind of performances we saw from them last month, I’d say we could grind out a draw.

Predicted Newcastle Line-up:
Krul; Debuchy, Coloccini, Williamson, Santon; Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko; Gouffran, Shola Ameobi, Remy

Score Prediction:

Man United 2-2 Newcastle.
