Reaction to Leicester City Loosing Vs Manchester City
Article by Jonathan Smith
So, Leicester City’s Capital One Cup
adventure came to an end on Tuesday evening at the Quarter-Final stage. Not
many people predicted them to progress to the Semi-Final having drawn
Manchester City at home. A lot of people were expecting a mauling considering
recent results for both teams. Leicester had lost two and drawn one of their
last three matches whereas Man City had beaten Arsenal 6-3 at the weekend and
won away at European Champions Bayern Munich last week.
Thankfully, the Foxes didn’t embarrass
themselves on the night against a strong City side. There was no Yaya Toure,
Aguero missed out through injury and Nasri dropped to the bench but the
inclusion of England number one Joe Hart, Spanish internationals David Silva
and Jesus Navas plus captain Kompany meant it was never going to be an easy
evening for the Championship side. You could argue that they have the strongest
squad in the Premiership and their strength in depth shone through as two
changes from the weekend scored in the first half. Aleksandar Kolarov and Edin
Dzeko gave the visitors a much deserved lead going in to the break. In all
honesty, it could and probably should have been more but some good saves from
Schmeichel and some less than impressive finishing kept Leicester in the game.
Unfortunately, Leicester couldn’t
capitalise on City’s wasteful nature in the second half and went three down
after 53 minutes. The Foxes did get a lifeline when Lloyd Dyer scored with 13
minutes to go. It was Dyer’s seventh goal of an excellent season so far. It was
the rapid winger’s 36th goal in his Leicester career which is in its
sixth season. His contract ends in the summer of 2014 and there has been
speculation linking him with local rivals Nottingham Forest. Personally, I
believe that Dyer would love to stay and I can’t imagine him trying to engineer
a move away from the club but his impressive form will surely be attracting
attention from elsewhere. He will be 32 next September. If he was four years
younger and producing his current form then some Premiership teams may have
been interested in signing him but his age will probably put top level teams
off.
Dyer’s goal was as close as Leicester
came to a comeback and eventually lost 3-1. They did the Football League proud
as the last representative in the competition. Focus now turns to the league
where City play the team that are currently at the top of the league for the
second time in a week. This time they travel to Loftus Road to face QPR for
what many will see as a pivotal fixture in the league campaign.
