Leicester Stunning Start Continues

Leicester City are three points clear at the top of the Championship following their 3-0 win at home against Millwall at the weekend. Burnley lost away at Huddersfield and QPR got nothing from their trip to Doncaster so Leicester were able to pull away slightly in the race for top spot.

Despite City’s excellent league form and even better home record this season, Millwall are a team who are always capable of ruining a party and have regularly caused the Foxes problems in the past. History wasn’t about to repeat itself on Saturday though. A quick look at the statistics tells you that Leicester had 31 shots at goal and 13 of them were on target compared with Millwall’s solitary effort that tested Schmeichel. It also shows that the home side had 62% of the possession so 3-0 really was a fair reflection of the dominance shown by Leicester throughout the match.

The Foxes led 1-0 at the break thanks to Lloyd Dyer’s 12th minute strike. Danny Drinkwater’s surging run from midfield resulted in a lovely chip to the far post where Dyer was on hand to volley home with his left foot. It was the winger’s sixth goal in all competitions so far this season and he’s in arguably the best form of his career at the moment.

City had to wait until the 52nd minute for their second goal of the day. A quick throw from Schmeichel found Jamie Vardy on the counter-attack. Vardy ran over half the length of the pitch and out-paced two Millwall defenders before slotting the ball between the ‘keeper’s legs.

Leicester only had to wait three minutes before they added a third. A huge Schmeichel clearance wasn’t dealt with at the back by Millwall and Vardy latched onto a poor attempted header back to ‘keeper David Forde. The former Fleetwood striker intercepted, rounded Forde and squeezed the ball in from an ever narrowing angle. It was only the sixth goal of his season but his performances have been much improved and his pace has been scaring Championship defences nationwide.

The Foxes have a very busy December ahead with trips to Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton coming up this week before a tough week that starts with a visit from second placed Burnley followed by Man City in the Capital One Cup and then a clash with QPR at Loftus Road just before Christmas. There’s still 29 league games to go this season and memories of the dramatic slump in form towards the back end of last season is still fresh in the minds of Leicester supporters but it’s hard not to get excited after such an impressive start.
