Norwich City: Just Another Bad Day

It is hard to find anything positive to write after Norwich suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of a Ryan Giggs inspired Manchester United.

Yes, it would be easy to go on about how the Norwich goal should not have been disallowed and how the penalty decision at the end of the first half was soft, but let’s face facts, Norwich were pretty rubbish.

The defence, which for the first 40 minutes held strong and looked well-disciplined, capitulated during the second half. Seriously, Rooney is the only half-decent player at United these days and you give him that much space?

Rooney’s second goal was disturbingly reminiscent of Gareth Barry’s goal against us when we played Everton at Goodison Park in January, which shows how little progress has been made.

What was most frustrating is Norwich were the team who performed like they had nothing left to play for, when in fact we are fighting for our lives.

Within the space of a week Norwich have gone from a team willing to show teeth and prove they will not just roll over to the same team who has struggled on the road all season.

Unfortunately, it was not just our result that went against us this weekend.

Fulham managed to hang on for a draw, Sunderland destroyed Cardiff and then Chelsea put themselves back in the title race by beating Liverpool.

Norwich’s only real chance of getting points from our final three games was to hope Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal had nothing to play for in the league and so would play a weakened team, or not push as hard as they might do earlier in the season.

Now City have to head to West London to face a Chelsea team in with a shot of the Premiership title and the Champions League.

While the final day of the season could offer the chance of points this might not be enough to save the Canary’s.

Maybe, just maybe there is a miracle on the horizon, a great escape for the boys in yellow, but it is becoming harder and harder to see any route out of the mess we find ourselves in.

If Norwich do go down it will be hard to look back on our foray into the top-flight with any kind of dewy eyed nostalgia, in fact the last two seasons have been pretty horrific in parts, but it is not all over till the fat lady sings and it is still mathematically possible for City to stay up.
