Rode has been a pivotal part in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2012/13 season in which they finished sixth of the Bundesliga.

This season has been less of a success for the industrious midfielder.

His Frankfurt team are currently sitting 11th in the table having also been knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Champions League quarter finalist Borussia Dortmund. They have little to no chance left to qualify for a European competition again after an unlucky exit out of the Europa League on away goal difference against Porto.

The question begs why Bayern, the reigning champions of Europe, actually signed him.

He has started 28 games so far this season, providing 3 assists in total. After scoring one goal in the DFB Pokal, he took his career total to 5.

From a defensive point of view, the German won 46,2% of all duels, neither excelling on the ground nor in the air. His passing game is the strong point. This season alone, Rode completed 82,4% of all attempted passes making him one of the best passers of this Frankfurt team.

Being only 23 years of age, Bayern might well see him as the long term replacement for the excellent but ageing Schweinsteiger. Both these players are about the same height, weight and provide a passing stability to their team.

Time will tell if Rode grows into that role but for now, the Bavarians look like they are planning for the long time.
