Jonny Williams, Why He Must Be Sold

Article by e-Crystal Palace Correspondent Andrew Ogden

You’ve just read that headline and your immediate reaction is probably stop being stupid, or something far more explicit. I’m an eagle as much as the next person but as with everything in life if you love something sometimes you have to let it go, this is for your own benefit as much as the other persons.

No one who has ever witnessed Joniesta play can ever argue against him being an incredible talent. Freedman, Holloway, Coleman, Pulis and Mccarthy have all waxed lyrical about the sublime skills he holds so why am I saying he must go? Here’s why.

1) He’s just too fragile to be counted on

His career has been beset with injuries, it’s no point having an amazing talent if we can’t count on him regularly. In the 3 seasons he’s been playing for the first team he’s only managed 59 appearances with only 16 starts. That’s just not good enough when you’re in a league that limits your squad size.

2) He’s not good enough for us

What? Are you crazy you’re shouting at the screen, you’ve already told us he’s amazing and now you’re saying he’s not good enough for us? Listen to me before you melt with rage. He is good and probably one of the best midfielders Palace has ever seen however he’s not a player who fits in with our current style. Contrary to popular belief Pulis is not playing long ball however he’s also not exactly playing tika-taka football either. Joniesta’s style best suits a team that passes well, with confidence and to feet a lot. We play on the swift counter attack and that just doesn’t suit him. So in that context he’s not good enough for us, he’d be better suited at a Swansea or Southampton than with us. His best use at Palace would be as an impact sub, changing the last 20 or 30 minutes of a game in our favour. That leads me onto my third and final argument as to why we should sell him

3) He wants regular football

Jonny has recently come out and stated that Swansea wants him and he is tempted. He stated that he needs to be playing regularly or he will have to leave, so the impact sub option is not available as he will not be happy with that.

To summarise we all love him but we all love our club more. Let him go, with a sell on fee clause, so that he can be happy. Who knows, he might just return as the world beater we know he can be and lead Palace to glory (or at least the league cup).
