Will Glen Johnson return to Liverpool next season?

Article by Liverpool Correspondent Emma Rhodes

One of the more popular discussions this January regarding the transfer window is surrounding Liverpool defender Glen Johnson, who is being closely watch by Arsenal's Arsene Wenger.

Johnson's contract is to run out in 18 months and it is believed that he has expressed no urgency to sign a new contract with the Reds any time soon. The former West Ham and Chelsea defender may be keeping his options open to see who will come knocking for him. Liverpool may be prepared to sell the 29 year old as Brendan has been playing Martin Kelly and John Flanagan as well as having Andre Wisdom out on loan.

Part of the reason Glen may be looking for a way out is that Liverpool may offer him a new contract but at the cost of a pay-cut. Currently Johnson receives a generous £110,000-a-week making him one of the highest paid defenders in the world.

Arsene Wenger will possibly be looking at replacing defender Bacary Sagnaand and rather than use the players Arsenal already have, the money the club has saved up may be used to purchase an experienced defender.

Other transfer rumours surrounding Liverpool include striker Abel Hernandez to work alongside fellow Uruguayan Luis Suarez, who has proved to be unstoppable so far this season. Brendan Rodgers has not been shy about discussing the transfer window and his wish to further improve the team.

Another target is Barcelona’s 22 year old Martin Montoya who has insisted he is happy at Barcelona, however he is still to sign a new contract with the Spanish side and his current deal expires this summer. His agent, Josep Maria Orobitg has also claimed that 4 top European sides are closely watching the Under 21 International.
