QPR Break Run with Sunderland Win

Being a QPR fan has never been an easy ride, nerves have been jangling, were we going to start the season with a similar lack of desire and passion which marked our last season in this league?

Pre-match discussions in the pub before focused on the importance on winning this one to avoid going into the two week brake feeling demoralised by another defeat.

One of our my mates remembered that the last time we were in the Premier League and went on that long win-less run which only ended when we played Fulham at home, he crashed his car on the way to the match! He was not sure he wanted to replicate that sequences of events for the R's to gain their first win of the season this time around.

Sunderland fans were gathered in Belushi's bar and were in good voice before the match, they have had a reasonable start to their season with two draws in the league and a win in the league cup.

Despite the demoralisation created by the three defeats in the Premier league and the league cup, we looked solid and essentially dominated the game. Sunderland had a chance within 30 seconds which hit the side netting.

Austin had a header cleared off the line and Hoilett had a chance when he broke through on the left. The R's began to put passes together, they grew in confidence and Leroy Fer had a shot that hit the bar and the home crowd believed that this could be their day.

A corner just before half time led to Austin slamming in a great goal that lifted us into a mid table position. This was such an important goal for both the team and Charlie Austin, who has had the pressure of missing a penalty in the first game and proving that he can make the step up to the Premier league.

Traore was put through in injury time and narrowly missed a chance to kill the match off. But as the whistle blew there was a palpable sense of relief throughout the ground.

A special mention to Rob Green who made three good saves during the match that kept QPR in the driving seat, he now has serious competition for the number 1 jersey in the form of Alex McCarthy who joined Rangers on Friday.

There were a number of good performances around the team, making it hard to pick one player who was more outstanding then another. Hoilett and Phillips were a constant threat on both the wings. Austin was putting himself into good scoring positions and Fer linked well with him making an impressive home debut in the 10 shirt.

The difference this win makes was immediately obvious, the R's fans were singing, smiling and talking excitedly as they made their way out of the ground. The team need the fans behind them and there needs to be a confidence that we can beat anyone on the day at Loftus road. No one is invincible as Stoke city proved yesterday afternoon at Manchester City.

Hopefully we can look forward to a settled and confident squad of players able to cut it in the best league in the world, we need this to wipe away the memories of our last campaign in the Premiership that was like one long rainy day.

Now we can face the two week break from domestic football with a smile on our face.
