23 August – Arsenal Youth 5-1 Chelsea Youth – Arsenal inflicted a heavy defeat on The Blues youngsters at London Colney on Saturday. Mukhtar Ali cancelled out Stephy Mavididi’s opener for The Gunners during an even first half. The home side proved the much stronger outfit after the interval with Mavididi adding a second, and doubling their advantage through substitute Harry Donovan. Another substitute, Tyrell Robinson added a brace let on to complete a comprehensive victory.
23 August – Chelsea 2-0 Leicester City – Chelsea continued their 100% start to the season with a hard-earned victory over newly promoted Leicester at Stamford Bridge. The Blues were very lacklustre in the first half, and indeed it was the visitors who made the clearing openings. Algerian Riyad Mahrez bought a smart save from Thibaut Courtois just past the half hour. Chelsea quickened the tempo after the break, and Oscar was desperately unlucky with a curling shot that hit the post. Kasper Schmeichel twice denied Branislav Ivanovic as Chelsea continued to press. Leicester squandered a gilt edged opportunity shortly afterwards when David Nugent raced cleared, only to be denied by Courtois who spread himself well to save with his legs. It was to prove a costly miss. On 62 minutes, Ivanovic worked space down the right, and crossed toward the lurking Diego Costa. Costa cleverly chested the ball in front of him to create half a yard before drilling a low shot through Schmeichel. The Blues made the game safe after 77 minutes. Eden Hazard cut inside in trademark style from the left before dispatching a deflected shot beyond Schmeichel. Goals: Diego Costa 62, Eden Hazard 77. Attendance: 41,604.
24 August– Chelsea Ladies 3-1 Birmingham City Ladies – Chelsea leapfrogged Birmingham to top the FA Women’s Super League table after an impressive performance. Birmingham have two games in hand over Chelsea, but were second best here. Ji So-Yun gave The Blues the lead, and Gilly Flaherty made it 2-0 early in the second half. Aoife Mannion halved the deficit on 65 minutes, but Chelsea restored their two goal lead two minutes later through Eniola Aluko.
24 August – Chelsea U21’s 3-1 Norwich City U21’s – The under 21’s maintained their 100% start to the season with victory over Norwich City at Aldershot. 30 August – Everton 3-6 Chelsea – This game will surely be added to Sky’s list of great games over the next few years. It was a game that started with two Chelsea goals in the first three minutes, and never let up. Despite the three goal margin, Chelsea were never comfortable until Diego Costa added his second, and Chelsea’s sixth in the last minute. The visitors burst out of the traps, and took the lead after just 30 seconds. Straight from the kick-off Chelsea struck at the heart of The Toffee’s defence, with Cesc Fabregas playing a perfect pass for Diego Costa to thump home his third goal of the season. Everton had barely recovered from that early blow when Branislav Ivanovic doubled The Blues advantage with less than 3 minutes on the clock. Everton halved the deficit on the stroke of half time when Kevin Mirallas directed a header beyond Thibaut Courtois from Seamus Coleman’s excellent cross. Chelsea restored their two goal advantage when Coleman turned Eden Hazard’s cross into his own net on 67 minutes. The home side would not lie down though, and Steven Naismith immediately reduced the arrears. It was crazy, end to end football, and just 5 minutes later Everton allowed Nemanja Matic too much space on the edge of the box, and he dispatched a left foot shot past Tim Howard. Surely that was the game safe? Well Everton hadn’t read that particular script, and former Blue Samuel Eto’o guided home a clever header from Leighton Baines cross. Straight from the re-start Ramires exchanged passes with Matic before beating Howard at his near post. It was almost 4-5 when Courtois did brilliantly to tip Mirallas’ effort onto the post. It proved to be the final blow for the home side, and Costa finally delivered the knockout blow when he ran on to Jon Obi Mikel’s astute back heel, leaving Sylvain Distin and Howard floundering with a shot into the far corner. It was the final act of a match that will go down as one of the greatest in Premier League history.
