Hull City Vs Chelsea Match Preview

KC Stadium, Saturday 11TH January 2014 12:45PM

Summary

Chelsea travel to the KC Stadium encouraged by a good run of recent form, having followed 10 points over the festive period with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Derby in the FA Cup. The Blues will need to be at their best to overcome a Hull outfit who have a good record at their Humberside home. In their last home game, The Tigers thumped six past a woeful Fulham side, and prior to that led 2-0 against Manchester United before finally succumbing 3-2. The Blues away form has improved of late, and they looked very impressive at Southampton on New Year’s Day, with a high-tempo, high-pressing game ultimately overwhelming The Saints.

History

Chelsea won the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the season with goals from Frank Lampard and Oscar securing a 2-0 win. The Blues also have a good recent record at the KC Stadium, and you have to go back to 1988 for Hull’s last victory over Chelsea. In the most recent meeting at this venue in 2010, the teams contested a 1-1 draw with Didier Drogba scoring for the visitors. In October 2008, Chelsea ran out comfortable 3-0 winners with goals from Lampard, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka.

Team News

Hull will still be missing Robbie Brady who started the season in such impressive form, while Sone Aluko is not yet fit enough to contest a starting place up front. Chelsea are still missing Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic as well as long-term absentee Marco Van Ginkel. Jose Mourinho is again likely to start with Willian, Oscar and Eden Hazard behind Fernando Torres in the attacking third as he aims to put pressure on the teams above with maximum points from the early kick-off. John Terry is likely to be recalled in defence, possibly at the expense of David Luiz.

Prediction

Despite Hull’s impressive home form, I am taking Chelsea’s improved form on their travels to continue here. Mourinho’s use of substitutes in the second half of games has been crucial to recent wins at Southampton and Derby, and could again prove to be the difference in what looks sure to be a closely fought encounter.
