Leicester City Surge Continues
Article by Jonathan Smith
David Nugent’s late finish was the only goal of the game at Elland Road in Saturday’s early kick-off between Leicester City and Leeds United. It meant the Foxes extended their lead at the top of the Championship to seven points, although that lead was reduced to five points by Saturday evening following a victory for QPR at Loftus Road.

Leeds supporters may feel a little hard done by having created plenty of goal-scoring opportunities throughout the first half but a combination of poor finishing and good defensive work prevented the hosts from taking the lead. Jamie Vardy did hit the post for Leicester in the first half but that was the only real chance that City managed to muster in the first 45 minutes.
United didn’t create as many chances in the second period and Leicester started to threaten more regularly. The introduction of Andy King and Kevin Phillips, making his debut for the club at the age of 40, made a difference with King bringing energy and Phillips showing good composure when in possession. Both played a part in the build-up to the winner with King passing to Liam Moore whose cross from the right was dummied at the near post by Phillips. The ball eventually found its way through to Nugent who managed to poke the ball past Paddy Kenny in the Leeds’ goal.
It was City’s sixth league win on the bounce and leaves them in a great position with 20 games to go. Leicester still have to play second placed QPR at home and third placed Burnley at Turf Moor but the squad will be well aware that no game is easy in the Championship. Three of their five league defeats have come against teams currently in the Championship’s bottom six. Automatic promotion could hinge on how the Foxes perform away against sides such as Barnsley who find themselves at the wrong end of the table.
In other news, the announcement that Wes Morgan’s contract has been extended until the summer of 2015 has brought some relief from the speculation regarding the numerous players whose deals come to an end in a few months. Kasper Schmeichel spoke after the Leeds match and stated that the players are focused on getting the job of promotion done before even considering new contracts which should reassure Foxes fans a little.
