How to solve a problem like Suarez

Arguably Liverpool’s hardest bit of transfer business this season is still to replace Suarez, who scored an impressive 31 goals in 37 games in his last season for the reds. During the last two transfer windows Liverpool have failed to correct the goal scoring gap by either doing too much or too little. Firstly last summer, signing attacking players such as Balotelli, Lambert, Lallana and Markovic who scored only 16 goals between them, and then in the winter with no transfers coming in at all to support a lacklustre attack.

To make comparisons to the feature film ‘Moneyball’ once again (it won't be the last time), when Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) tells his scouts (or in Liverpool’s case the transfer committee) the flaw in their plan in replacing Johnny Damon (or in FSG’s case Luis Suarez) couldn’t be more relevant or fitting for Liverpool, FSG or Rodgers.

Billy Beane: Is there another first baseman like Giambi?

Scouts: No
Billy Beane: And if there was could we afford him?

Scouts: No

Billy Beane: Then what the f@*k are you talking about?

Liverpool won’t be able to find another Suarez and even if they did they wouldn’t be able to afford him. It’s not just his goals to consider, It’s his work rate, his leadership, the fact he never seems to get injured, and if he does he can play through it. Suarez is irreplaceable for a team such as Liverpool.

Liverpool need to act like a would be Dr. Frankenstein. Re-create a different kind of attacking monster from different transfer acquisitions. The recent inclusion of Firmino, who scored an impressive 22 goals in 37 games from midfield during the 2013-2014 season for Hoffenheim, before a respectable 10 in 36 last season in the Bundesliga (not including as nearly as many assists), is a plus. Next on Liverpool’s list will be an out and out striker, if not two and with the Merseyside club playing hardball with Aston Villa over Benteke’s 30 plus million buy out clause they have looked further afield, once again, to South America and to Carlos Bacca. Bacca seems to have that South American aggression and never say die attitude the likes of Suarez, Tevez and Costa bring to a team with such great effect. Bacca has had two successful seasons at Sevilla scoring 49 goals in 106 and winning back to back Europa Leagues. It is thought Bacca is keen on a move to the Premier League and to Liverpool, but will they match his 21.5 million buy out clause?

With the recruitment of Firmino, someone with the pedigree of Bacca and maybe one more option in attack, Liverpool might have just gone some way to replacing Suarez.

  1. Simple, get a solution like Lacazette. Someone who has an eye for goal, but also offers mobility and pace, which means he can either harass upfield as soon as the opposing defence gaims possession, or drop deep to help regain possession in our half and drive everyone else forward as well as create something himself.
