Whatever team you support, you can’t help but smile when you watch Alexis play, the sheer determination that he possesses and the desire to win every game at all costs, combined with his undisputed skill and humble personality makes him one of the most feared forwards in world football and in his first season in English football he has certainly hit the ground running.
The real question however is whether he has been the signing of the season? Many argue that Diego Costa was that player. The Spaniard fired Chelsea to the top of the league right from the off and was one of the key elements in keeping them there through to the end, crowning them champions.
Some papers have fought the corner of the ‘budget buys’, arguing that someone like Southampton’s Sadio Mané, who arrived at St Mary’s in the summer for a lesser £13.2 million, to be the signing of the season. Mané now holds the record for the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history, not only that but he also managed 10 goals in 30 games for the Saints whilst operating on the flanks which is an impressive return.
Alexis turned down a reported move to Liverpool in a bid to win trophies, causing 'controversy, in the footballing world. He made the right decision for me. Not only did he win a trophy and achieve Champion’s League qualification, he’s just what Arsenal look for and not only that, he’s what they needed! A powerful, direct, pacey winger with an exceptional work rate who can score goals, which is exactly what Arsenal got when the purchased the little Chilean.
Despite all the arguments however, for me, I don’t think that anyone can take away the fact that Alexis IS the signing of the season. His attitude and humble personality is something you rarely see in modern football and he should be a role model to all footballers. He has almost single handedly given the whole Arsenal squad a boost in morale and spirit and his enthusiasm has undoubtedly rubbed off on other squad members and has been the spearhead of a promising season for the gunners, can he continue this over to next season? We’ll have to wait and see.

The 26 year old Chilean joined the Gunners from Barcelona midway through the summer transfer window for a fee believed to be in the region of £35 million, iit really has been money well spent. Alexis started his career with the North London outfit in helping them to an impressive 3-0 win against the then champions Manchester City in a performance that left Arsenal fans craving more. He then went on to take the Premier League by storm, scoring 16 goals in 34 games, with an abundance of assists and chances created. Alexis also managed to notch 4 goals in 5 FA Cup appearances, helping the Gunners to their 12th FA Cup triumph, and in doing so he has become golden boy amongst the Arsenal fans, who are not easily pleased!
