Foxes Never Quit

‘Foxes Never Quit’. It’s a motto that’s been associated with Leicester City since the Martin O’Neill era and one that is emblazoned above the tunnel at the King Power Stadium. Every City player walks beneath it before taking to the field of play. In previous seasons, different motto's have been used. Micky Adams brought in ‘Keep The Faith’ during his turbulent spell as manager and ‘We’re In It Together’ was used in promotional campaigns when Rob Kelly was in charge. This season has seen Leicester City play the kind of football which makes ‘Foxes Never Quit’ an apt motto once again.

Tuesday night saw struggling Yeovil Town visit the King Power Stadium and they took the lead after 22 minutes. City were well below their best all evening and could have had no complaints if the game had ended in defeat. There’s a reason why the Foxes had gone 17 league games without defeat before Tuesday night though. As the game went into injury time, Kasper Schmeichel came up for a corner and decided to stay up as City retained possession. The Danish international met a resulting cross from the right with a booming header which cannoned down from the crossbar. The goal was not given, although television replays suggest it may have crossed the line, but Chris Wood followed up to equalise. The unbeaten run was extended to 18 games and a point salvaged.

15 of Leicester’s 70 league goals have come in the last ten minutes of matches and if those 15 goals hadn’t have been scored then City would be 14 points worse off. That would leave the Foxes on 68 points and in third place rather than top of the league. Two points from a possible six has reduced City’s lead to just three points but with a game in hand and second placed Burnley next up, the destination of the title is still within Leicester’s hands. An improved performance will be required to beat Burnley at Turf Moor. The Clarets are yet to lose a league game at home so far this season. Queens Park Rangers were also unbeaten at home in the league before City defeated them 1-0 back in December.

City are still 13 points clear of third placed QPR with a game in hand and Rangers can only win a maximum of 24 points. I can’t see the Foxes failing to gain automatic promotion from that position but they will need to improve to ensure the title heads to the King Power Stadium and not Turf Moor.
