Tottenham came from 2-0 down to claim an inspiring 3-2 win at home to Southampton, to end a run of four games without a win. Southampton dominated the early stages, carving the Spurs defence open time after time. Despite giving Spurs plenty of warning signs for playing a high line, they didn’t learn.
On nineteen minutes Southampton took the lead. A long ball from Boruc, a Kyle Naughton mistake proving to be very costly leaving it to fall at Jay Rodriquez feet who coolly slotted it away in the far corner to give the Saints the advantage. Just nine minutes later came Southampton’s second, again a mistake from Naughton. This time he miscued the ball, it fell at Lambert’s feet with the number seven slotting the ball to his right to find England teammate Adam Lallana who controlled and side footed past Lloris with his left foot doubling Southampton’s lead. Boo’s ringing around White Hart Lane with fans becoming increasingly frustrated.

Requiring something special, Spurs were gifted a way back into the game. Three minutes later a third mistake, this time from Southampton’s Clyne. A cross from the right, Clyne failing to clear leaving Eriksen with the simple task at the far post to slot in to bring spurs back into the game.
Only one minute into the second half Tottenham were level, the hardworking Soldado chasing which look liked a lost cause, out muscled Lovern in the corner, sending a perfect low cross over to give Eriksen an easy finish to bag his second of the afternoon. This was in fact the Danish internationals first brace of his professional career. All of a sudden, Southampton’s threat from the first half was non-existent with the Spurs back four looking far more comfortable. Eriksen did have a chance to complete his hatrick, Kaboul sent a fantastic long ball forward, the Dane’s first touch was immaculate but took too long and the chance was gone. Just as the game look to have fizzled out into a draw and Southampton had survived the Tottenham onslaught. Three minutes into injury time Eriksen squared to Sigurdsson about twenty five yards out, the Icelandic International hit a sweet low strike leaving Boruc with no chance to lift the roof at White Hart Lane completing a truly spectacular comeback.
Man of the match Christian Eriksen described in his post-match conference the key to the turn around, “We got a little speech at half-time and in the second half we were new guys."
Under pressure Spurs boss Tim Sherwood was thrilled with his side “It is harder to come from 2-0 down at home than 2-0 away from home. There is an expectancy but it takes real guts, character and spirit to do that, brilliant.”
Southampton Boss Mauricio Pochettino was left tremendously frustrated, stating the ref was against his side “We suffered after conceding the equaliser and the last goal made it very difficult for us. There's nothing to complain about the third goal. We lost the game, more than Tottenham won the game, and they had a little help from the referee”
The victory leaves Spurs 6 points behind Arsenal having played a game more, leaving their hopes getting fourth still in doubt. But it’s safe to say this was a bright spot in what has been a quite miserable season for Tottenham.

Great game for Sigurdsson, Soldado and Eriksen.
ReplyDeleteSigurdsson coming in for Dembele in second half changed the game for Spurs. Gylfi had that pass down the right wing, that Soldado was able to out muscle the defender and assist Eriksens goal. I was impressed by Spurs last weekend and specially those three.
Let's do the same against Liverpool. COYS!
