It’s been a quiet week or so at Leicester City with regards new players and transfers. However, the team behind last year’s title winning squad have been hard at work in other areas, trying to ensure the foxes have the best start to Premier League life.
Already this summer the negotiators have been hard at work, trying to keep hold of some of Leicester’s top talent. A month or so ago, Leicester’s shot stopper Kasper Schmeichel committed his immediate future to the club, signing a deal that would keep him at the club until 2018. On top of that, over the past few weeks, Leicester’s defensive duo Marcin Wasilewski & Wes Morgan have signed on for an additional 1 year and 3 years respectively. Contract extensions that would have particularly pleased the Leicester City faithful as well, were that of the midfield partnership of Danny Drinkwater and Matty James, both signing on for an additional 4 years at the club. Nigel Pearson had also committed himself to the club he got promoted back into the big time, by signing on the dotted line for a further 3 years.
So what now for the foxes?
I’m sure that behind the scenes, more contract negotiations will be taking place. As I write this, it is believed that Leicester’s top scorer last season, David Nugent, who himself is out of contract this summer, has been put on a 1 week rolling contract until a permanent deal can be finalised, it is believed a 2 year deal has been offered to Nugent.
So after make strong and clear progression by tying down their young stars such as Schmeichel, Drinkwater and James, will there be much more transfer activity coming in or out of the King Power stadium?
We have already heard this week, that attacking midfielder Paul Gallagher has returned to Preston North End on a season long loan after his loan spell at Deepdale last season. Leicester themselves seem close to signing of Port Vale youngster Joe Davis to the developmental squad. The proposed move for Cardiff City striker Frazier Campbell seems to have hit a bit of a stumbling block, rumoured to be about wages. Crystal Palace are now favourites to snatch the Cardiff frontman. While Brighton hit man, Leonardo Ulloa, has supposedly added fuel to the fire by suggesting to Brighton manager Sami Hyypia that he would like a move to the Premier League, making the chances of him becoming a Leicester player even stronger, even though the foxes have had multiple bid turned down for the striker.
Leicester have been linked with many names over the past few weeks, but as it stand these are all just rumours. Names like Algerian international Majid Bougherra have been mention, although Derby County are favourites for his signature with a host of other clubs interested. One of the biggest names that keep getting linked to the foxes, is that of Benfica legend, Óscar Cardozo. The 31 year old has been consistently linked with Leicester over the summer and if signed, would be considered a star signing for city.
With further rumour and speculation surrounding transfers to the club, one thing is for certain, Leicester are in for a proper welcome to the Premier League, with Everton visiting the King Power on the opening day, followed by matches with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United within the first 5 games. I’m sure fans will have a good mix of excitement and nervousness going into the ‘baptism of fire’, but for most fans, it’s a dream set of fixtures to be given in the first month of their Premier League return.
Let’s hope Leicester keep moving from strength to strength with both internal contract affairs and external transfer affairs to give them the best chance to kick off their top flight adventure in style.
